Analysts: Essential sold only 5,000 phones

28 September 2017
It hasn't been a month since launch, but the initial numbers don't look great.

I was waiting for this phone for months. Not only because Andy Rubin's company made it, but because it looked stunning. Then I started reading reviews. The thing that totally made me say "No Thanks" was the awful camera. Then, I started seeing people show pictures of broken phones. Seriously, they said Titanium frames, ceramic backs, gorilla glass blah blah blah, and yet people's phones broke while in their pockets? WTF? And for $700 dollars to boot, it's not a good deal.
I'll wait a few months to see if they fix all their crap, and lower the price to around $500, and then I'll maybe buy it.

Kangal, 28 Sep 2017I hope the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X sales are ... moreiPhone 8 is too expensive. iPhone X isn't it literally is twice as good as most phones out there. Blame androids for taking a step back in 2017.

I mean seriously S8 has the same ram and processing power as S7 and less battery life to boot. Apple never did that! Each of her phones is better than the last no matter how small or big the change is.

In a year that everybody stood still Apple made a giant leap (first trully bezeless phone, A11 is twice (!) as powerful as qualcomm chips at this point), obviously they're gonna ask a limb for it. If they had true competition they wouldn't.

Just look at Note 8, that excuse of a phone ... it is seriously worse than Note 4 (!) in certain things, yet Samsung still asks 900 bucks for it. *That's* the expensive phone , because it is a step back in serious aspects yet more money is asked for it...

i say the same that some user here say:

if this have a apple logo and call it iPhone X v2 it will run out of stock easy....

because apple fanboys are noob's and dont understand nothing of nothing in hardware/specs. they will buy it anyway.

Unfortunately it wasn’t that well received even by those hardcore geeks who follow Andy Rubin and loved the Sidekick. The Essential just isn’t a good phone, unfortunately, and for the price it’s more of a collectors item rather than a good buy as a phone.

Anonymous, 28 Sep 2017unsymmetrical phones are ugly. Even with a bezelles bottom and having the bottom have that same camera cutout from the top (or hell, why not even make them on all four sides) just to make it look symmetrical still won't make it a beauty but a mess. Those unused space/pixel/estate is essentially useless

I am not surprised that they didn't manage to sell well.

              - NO SD card slot
              - NO 3.5mm jack
              - NO waterproofing
              - NO wireless charging
              - NO SIM card
              - NO radio
              - Display is not symmetrical
              - Bad quality camera
              - Very expensive considering the alternatives (not including the chinese brands)

Overall, by the time this will appear on the European market, people will either loose their interest, or will already have a different bezeless phone.

Get your facts straight. He knows more about tech in his pinky than most of us here can only dream of. That's why he is a billionaire and we are not.

At least it is rare. That's rarer than Nexus One which sold about 135K. Collector's item.

Double standards. "$700 is still a lot", but not for chinaphone "nokia" 8 and unsupported lg v30, right? Be fair, men. You just biased.

Lets be honest: people simply don't like the phone. Xiaomi used to sell batches of 50k phones in mere seconds, iPhones sell millions in the first week. 5000 in a few weeks simply means not that many people are ready to pay the huge price for the startup hype. They want to buy product hype, no matter who made it.

To be fair to Andy Rubin he probably knows nothing about hardware, camera and anything and everything beyond a few aspects of the operating system. He is a complete novice in the Smartphone space. That also explains the unexplainable emphasises on Tatanium and Ceramic (nobody wants a phone to last forever). They should have solely concentrated on Top end Hardware and Optimization of Software.

Also the pricing of the phone is probably Double of what it is truly worth. No Name in the market; no after sales; average to below average design language; no waterproofing; non expandable storage; buggy phone wih below average battery life, and MOST importantly the Photo and Video Quality are Well below flagship standard.

for a phone that has the name "essential" in it, it is seriously lacking in essential features like a headphone jack, expandable storage, and a removable battery. no wonder it's a flop.

Front camera cutout that sticks like a sore thumb and missing 'essentials'. I'm not surprised this overpriced essential ph-one doesn't sell.

Why buy this expensive Essential phone when Sharp Aquos S2 is only $300. Yes, Sharp version is only SD660 but its worth better. There is no assurance Essential going to release another one but for Sharp it is already their 4th generation bezel less Aquos series. They even got a page for Sharp Aquos S3 already in gsmarena.

The phone is overpriced for the features it has, youd have to be mad to buy this over an established flag ship such as s8 or g6.
