About the mp3s, you just need to go to media and open music. then press menu and press 'receive by bluetooth'. Effectivly you are 'opening the gates' to stuff coming in. Yes it is slightly annoying but business customers will appreciate it as a security feature.
about the question about buying a sim free blackberry. you will only get all the features apart from the email side of it, which is the main part of it!!

Hey, I'm considering buying an unlocked GSM BlackBerry 8100 smartphone. I live in The Bahamas and the prices are ridiculous for the blackberry devices and services. I do have a gsm sim card but I was wondering if all of the features of a BlackBerry would be available to me if i purchased the 8100 and just slipped my SIM card in. Or would it just have the features of a normal cell phone? Thanks in advance!

For those of you with the text issue, where the name doesnt appear.
1. Press the call button from the main screen
2. press menu
3.go to options
4. go to smart dialling
5. where it says country code, change to +44 (if your in the uk) instead of unknown.
for those of you who cant get on with suretype, its because you cant spell!!! if you can spell suretype is the most intuative wway of typing i promise you, T9 is sooooooo basic compared to T9.
i promise you this will be the best blackberry or phone youve ever had!!

This says it has an SD card slot for expandable memory - can anyone confirm this? Sounds too good to be true! If so, what is the largest micro SD it supports?
Also, what happened to the roller wheel? I guess it's in the little joystick in the middle - is this an improvement?
There were some annoyances some people posted, mainly battery life and the predictive text, but I have a 7100g at the moment and they don't bother me (but the slow processor on the 7100 bothers me!)

Hi all, lots of mixed reviews on this handset- I have tried the following handsets HTC Tytan, SE990, BB 8700 and the Pearl is far superior in many many aspect!I consider myself a power user and use all PIM features and also very heavy on the emailing too, the keyboard took me about 2 days to master and now typing is a breeze and nearly as quick as the 8700, the audio quality is brilliant, speaker phone brilliant, battery life good. The pearl scroller is fantastic and makes navigating spreadsheet a breeze, the phone is also very stable & I have experienced no software glitches, I would highly recommend this to any user that wants a stylish extremely functional and reliable handset

I'm a heavy business user and was really hoping that this phone would be good replacement to my Imate SP5, but it's not. In fact it's dreadful. Of course there are a few elements which are truly inspired, but in genereal the user interface, logic and (especially) the keyboard let the phone down badly.
If only it worked as good as it looks! The keyboard is a poor compromise between a full qwerty and T9 predictive text and it fails dismally. People know qwerty, and people (generally) know predictive texts on normal numeric keypads. But with this phone you have to throw all that away and pretty much start again. You end up taking forever to send texts, especially if you have unusual words to spell and like to fully puncutate your words. Not only that but the layout of the keys makes it very difficult to text unless you can look at the phone. Oh, and another thing, the backspace ('del') key is tucked on the very right hand edge of the keyboard which makes it either painful, or very difficuly to use if you're right handed. And given the rotten typing system, believe me you'll be using it...!
There are a ton of other gripes; some big and some small. A basic one is that the bluetooth / signal flashing LED (that is normally blinking all the time unless you can find the option to turn it off ) blinks so brightly that you cannot drive with the phone mounted on your dashboard at night - it's just too distracting.
The roller button (the 'pearl') does work well so I hope this is a feature we will see on more phones in the future.
Aside from that, the logic of the operating system is poor compared to other phones. I've now had 3 weeks to get used to it and am sending it back to Vodafone - I just can't get on with it. Re comments on this site about bluetooth, it does work but again the logic is flawed. For instance, I've got my phone turned on and my bluetooth headset is floating around in my pocket somewhere, connected to the phone. I get an incoming call so I answer the call *on the handset*, not on the headset which I can't locate... instead of the call coming straight to the phone handset in these circumstances (as logically it does on my Imate), the call goes through to the unlocatable headset and you then have to fish through the menus to transfer the call back.
The phone is littered with illogicalities such as this, so off it goes back to Vodafone...

a nice device that I owned for about 4 weeks. too bad it has that horrible 'suretype'. when the 8800 is released with the Pearl features and full QWERTY, then we'll have the 'real' device we're all looking for. ok RIM get off your butts and launch the 8800 already@!!!!!!

the bluetooth issue: use with headsets is fine, its the data transfer (transferring pictures/mp3 from phone to phone) that is having issues. mine sends fine but really struggles to receive. this doesnt particularly bother me cos i can email anything i want to myself and it doesnt cost me anything. im sure a software upgrade will be released to fix it. you need to be aware this is BlackBerrys first 'full' bluetooth phone. look back to samsungs first bluetooth fone (the d500) and see how many issues that had!
and for those of you who seem to have the need to edit and create documents (which most people who actually have a 'full' PDA rarely use) you cant do it on the blackberry OS as it comes, but if you REALLY need to, go to handango.com and download the software and pay for it! most people dont actually need this feature, they just claim they do!i know that is a very general comment but most 'mobile-workers' dont have the time to create and edit documents!
