Let me translate LG's statement:
"We can no longer compete against Apple and Samsung in most latin american markets, so instead of taking the fully specced G5 there we're making sort of a G5 mini - only this little guy is just the same size and build of the G5. People aren't really going to notice any difference as far as performance (well, maybe the camera will be a bit slower or we'll have to strip a feature or two off of it), and this way we can sell it marginally cheaper than the S7. That way maybe, just maybe, we might do well with it there. Otherwise we're screwed, i mean Latin America doesn't work like the USA. Few people can afford high end flagships, and most of them are already sold on either Apple or Samsung. It doesn't really matter that our phone is actually better, because we can't compete with their brutal marketing strategies".
In Argentina you'd have to pay nearly 2000 US$ for an 800 US$ S6. Minimum wage here is close to 800 US$ (and i think it's pretty obvious a lot of people live on way less than that). Those who can afford such things often don't really understand much about tech (your average "hey i just got an iPhone 6S! What? 3D touch? What is that o_O" sort of guy) and are usually more interested in showing their economic standing - and people think of samsung and apple as the best brands, all others fall into the "others" category and are sneer worthy.

AnonD-77892, 27 Feb 2016its okey since LG isn't that big deal company. there are a ... moreLG is not a big company? Really? LG Group revenue is 150 billion USD and they employ 220 000 people.
Having said that, I am mad at them for their ever increasing bezels since G2 and the stubbornness not to introduce OLED screen for their flagships.

Anonymous, 27 Feb 2016What?? Snapdragon's gpu is actually stronger, just not that... moreTheir GPU is bigger and more power hungry, that's why. The Mali GPU are better overall with better performance over time, the GPU clocks are even lower than last year. They also have better supported drivers, so if you tried to use the GameCube emulator, the most demanding thing you can do with your phone, and one of the few apps where performance actually matters, you would get much better performance.
Try finding a single app where the sd actually makes a difference and has higher performance. For most other apps they both would run at full speed, so the ability to use the emulator, and having better performance over time, are the only things that actually matter really.

It is the same wrong move as Samsung's decision not to offer Note 5 to Europe.
There are people in South America rich enough to buy the flagship. Making the light version of it ,LG is just sending the message that those people are less important as there are many mobile phone lovers there as well who would like to have the last word of technology.
Worth adding is that Brazil is one of the countries where both LG and Samsung have their own manufacture and those phones are not imported which reduces the end price.

People of Latin America can not buy it .... it's the stupidest thing I've read, here's Iphones and Galaxy have a great success, most of my friends and people on the street are using high-end phones and that I do not live in one of the most developed countries in the region.

The more reason for folks out there to boycott LG phones totally...after all its not like they make unique and durable phones..very poor marketing strategy indeed. Samsung will continue to dominate! U either get an Exynos or a SD variant..nothing like what LG is trying to do.

Vr still doesn't have any traction anywhere just yet. I feel it'll grow a fair amount this year though.
Lg's decision to still call it the g5 seems odd, especially if they aren't actually releasing the proper g5.

AnonD-486125, 27 Feb 2016Then why Samsung bother keep using SD soc They're using it in USA because to use exynos they would need extra licenses for the modem or something. It looks like the default option for them was exynos and they're only using SD because they have to. SD chip is good, just behind the exynos, especially in terms of GPU.

Jin1234, 27 Feb 2016They said the decision is made based on the operator of tha... moreYou just couldn't be more wrong... i live in this region and the iPhone still sells in Latin america, and people still buy it. The demand for flagship phones is still there and LG is just underestimating their Latin american customers by offering the "cheaper" version of the LG G5 and cutting extra content. LG just could offer both phones, and import lower numbers of the real LG G5 and more of the "lite" variant.
And for the VR stuff, how people could be interested if you are not even promoting it and killing it before gets any traction. Also importing phones is not a option, the delivery time and added cost is just not practical.
I have the LG G3 and with this move, sure as hell i won't buy any LG product and i will spread the word about this castrated LG G5 version.
