The position of the person's hand on the N97 Mini doesn't look entirely natural. Your hand would likely be further up on the handset, away from the antenna, which is why the antenna is there in the first place. A drop from 7 to 2 bars isn't good, but the phone would still not be dropping calls, so I'm not sure what Apple feel they gain by releasing this.
Bottom line, Apple's design is poor.

apple realy sucks! First they release iphone with hardware problem, then they say that the users hold it wrong, then they release a firmware update which should fix the hardware problem but it just messes up the signal bars, then they give the users free cases which doesn't only confirm the hardware fault, but also makes the iphone look cheaper and thicker. Now they are trying to blame other phones but it doesnt fix their reception problem, it shows how childish they are. Posted on nokia 5800 which never caused any reception issues nor dropped calls. HA

oh, so other phones' signal drops too?? Wow, well I guess that makes Iphone4's problem ok then.
Get Real Apple!
If this a "If I'm going down then I'm taking everyone with me" moment?
Geez
Instead of putting your energies into making it up to your customers (fixing the problem!), you bring this out?
Are the people working in apple over 8 years old??

Laugh trip!
I tried to grasp the entire backside of my Sony Ericsson handset and to my Motorola, but there was no effect, and still the signal bar was still full.
Perhaps he was at the weak signal room/area while taking that videos.

[deleted post]Oh, and you're the hater who can't accept the fact that ip4 is still a huge success despite all the hating that you're doing :) And you're so upset that Apple exposed a fact about smartphones having antennagate. And you're even more upset that Apple made a lot of money again. Stop the hate. It's not healthy :)

valejro, 22 Jul 2010why would you squeeze a phone when you can just hold it in ... moreAnd why would you touch a known weak spot of your phone? Lol. "I need to make a call. I have to make sure I touch this little black strip down here so I can have reception issues". Lol.

Anonymous, 22 Jul 2010Apple did a wonderful job to create public awareness. This... morethe reason why apple has to come out and proof to others these crap is because i need to educate all isheep. in order to earn the billions. users of other phone maker does not need to as they are smart enough to differentiate whats crap and whats not. even without the need of a press release, nokia and samsung could still sell millions and make billion. while apple has to brainwash its fan in order to earn billion. and note pls, samsund earned 4.5 billion on sales of 38 billion. eat that apple, no matter how much apple earn, it would never surpass samsung.

Anonymous, 22 Jul 2010There are nearly 700 comments here, and you still come out ... moreOne finger, two fingers, three fingers, who cares? Point is, all phones have antennagate, not just the iphone. That tiny black strip on the ip4 can be easily avoided. It's a weak spot, just like other phones have their own weak spots. It's either you can deal with it, or you can't. You have a choice.

Anonymous, 22 Jul 2010>>>>Apple did a wonderful job to create public ... moreWell sorry to burst your bubble as well because ip4 aren't dropping calls either. You yourself have stated that attenuation cannot be eradicated (Apple might in the future), but can be avoided. So how can you avoid it? By simpy avoiding that weak spot, or, as in Apple's case, get a case which really eliminates the ip4 weak spot. As Apple have said, they could've gone on and on with other phones, but really, a few examples should get the message accross.
What? Nokia makes more oney than Apple? Thanks for the laugh :)

why would you squeeze a phone when you can just hold it in a normal way. I just had n97mini on my other data plan, i tried squeezing it hard for curiousity's sake, and the signal just drop to 4 bars, i tried doing this again 3x and it gave me the same results... So i take it that my nokia has excellent signal reception.. I tried this on my brother's iphone4, and the signal dropped to nothing. This experiment made me realize that iphone4 has weak signal reception. I don't want to be bias towards apple but my experiment gave me these results. I thought that if the antenna prob is true, i suggest that Apple make a recall and redesign it, otherwise it would be truly problematic if you got an expensive and feature rich phone but you can't make a call at all. By the way i didn't apply the squeeze on the iphone4 in my second attempt, all i did was touch the left lower part of the phone as what most reports say, the signal dropped.

Anonymous, 22 Jul 2010Great job Apple. Antennagate is a common issue among smart... moreThere are nearly 700 comments here, and you still come out with that kind of garbage?
How on earth is this N97-mini video "the same thing" ?? THere's 2 bars left, the user is gripping it completely around the antenna, and they purposefully have a HSDPA data transfer going in the background to try and increase error rates.
In contrast, the iPhone 4 was going down to ONE bar, with a SINGLE FINGER on an area of about 1 centimeter!
What is wrong with you people.

Great job Apple. Antennagate is a common issue among smartphones, so I don't know why the media singled out the ip4 when the rest obviously have the same issue. That's one of the downsides of being the most popular device. One small issue, and the press blows it out of proportion, and of course the haters celebrate. But they're messing with the wrong company. Of course Apple has to strike back. And what Apple has proven makes the media people look like ignorant jokers. Well some of them at least.

That's really dirty of apple. 2 bars wouldn't drop a call anyway. I don't like my N97 mini too much to be honest, but you can't beat nokia at making a phone that functions as a phone.

Anonymous, 22 Jul 2010Apple did a wonderful job to create public awareness. This... more>>>>Apple did a wonderful job to create public awareness. This would push the industry to improve or fix weak spots. I can't believe that the others and sat there pretending that they don't have attenuation issues when they do. Apple is doing a great job. No wonder they made more billions again unlike the others :)
Sorry to burst your bubble, but unlike iPhone 4, other phones do not loose enough signal to drop calls. Just look at how hard he is trying to even get the phone to loose a bar or two and despite that the phone still works. Signal attenuation is a problem that cannot be fully eradicated, but they sure as hell can be minimized enough to not drop calls. Also most of these phones do not even drop the signal bar with the typical way people grip a phone. Why is apple even choosing only particular phones among the thousands of models available and many of the ones they are choosing are pretty old models. If the problem is so prevalent, they should be able to replicate the issue in any phone right?
As for Apple making billions of dollars, Nokia still makes more money from phones than apple does. Nokia may not sell 3M phones in 2 weeks, but they still sell more phones than Apple does. So numbers are not everything.
