Weekly poll: The S Pen - do you actually need it

31 July, 2016
Galaxy Note's defining feature is the S Pen. Or is it just the upgraded hardware over the Galaxy S?

I won't buy anything without pen since it's a big part of my paperless workflow and I'm always having to note or diagram something down. Samsung Galaxy Note is the original and king of pen phablets.

I like the S pen for taking notes and only for that. It comes very handy when you need to script something in a hurry and you want to keep it saved. I am more attracted though to the fairly big screen and the better hardware of the Note Series.

I vote for the S Pen. My Nvidia Shield works really well with the stylus so looking forward to getting the Note 7 with S Pen. Sometimes I type badly due to large thumbs so the pen is an ace idea, plus I enjoy drawing now and then.

Love the S-Pen. I use it daily on my Note5, just as I did on each of my previous Note devices, and just as I will on all of my future purchases of Note devices. Its features and convenience far outweigh any of the silly reasons that people come up with as to why they think it's unnecessary.

As a bonus, almost exclusively using it keeps my screen free of oils, residue, and fingerprint smudges.

It is safe to say that the S-Pen is here to stay.

Most of the time I have used fingers but many times S Pen have some handy and useful features. It's just about making an habit to use it and the more you start ti utilize it, the more you will like it.

However, the double curved edges will have to be tested, with those thin metal sides. Yes, I wonder if the palm rejection will work properly.

I do have a Note 8, but I don't carry that because of the size inconvenience - I just can't carry in my pocket. 5.7" is something I can carry, like an A6 notebook. Most of the time, I just carry the Note 3, and therefore I don't have to carry two gadgets. Fits my top shirt pocket.

I even use split screen for references while I sketch. Here's an example while I had time to kill while waiting:

The s pen is the reason i bought the note 4. Most useful thing about the note line.

I remember my brother getting a Note and not realizing it had an S pen inside of it. A few weeks later he just accidentally pulled it out, liked at me and said "I bet Steve Jobs just rolled over three times in his grave...".

They don't use the S Pen at all, and want to show off their latest purchase and tell everyone how shiny the fragile glass back is, after peeling off their protective plastic case first.

This is suppose to be a tool, not a status symbol.

Is the S-pen necessary? Of course not! Who needs an S-pen, who cares if it's the defining feature of Note series, who even thinks it makes the best stylus-phablet combo or ever uses it for precision work like notes/sketches/etc.
Amazing poll. I have some similar suggestions for your next few polls.

for a 5 to 7 incher display? i say no! our side palm needs to comfortably sit aligned with the pen's tip to get a decent sketch. and i dont think most people is always on run to jot some notes. but i have to say, samsung is the best for showing full s-pen features.

The S pen is by far the single most important feature of the Note. I wouldn't bother with the Note if it had no S pen.

okay the gimmick things in s-pen is there menu never used action memo or smart select or even screen write / but i used to have older cool feature that showd in note 3 pen app it was so great you just draw an sqaure and chosing an app / stupid samsung was limiting some apps to there own but if you are rooted than you could have all apps in pen app / right know the menu of spen is really useless / but i still enjoy s pen as its mouse when you need to mark many picture in gallery and also copy paste feature in browser

Its all about the pen, I could have upgraded to any of the other phones but I want the pen. I have to say the question seems silly as if your not bothered about the pen youd just buy the S7. I will stick with the Note 4 until they release a new Note handset.

In the old days, most of the Note 1 and 2 buyers were big screen fans and those were the phones with the biggest screens available.
Now there is no reason for a big screen fan to buy a Note, as there are too many phones with equal or even larger screens. So, the only thing left to distinguish the Notes is the S-pen. I'd guess that all Note users are-at least-regular S-pen users.
I use the S-pen a lot and I feel very constrained by the fact that I do not have many choices. It would be great if Samsung could offer the same S-pen functionality in smaller (5"-5.2") devices, for people that use the S-pen for quick notes or memos.

The one who have used Note Series will definitely know whats the power of S Pen...

This poll must have been designed by a teenager.

The poll title is: Do you love S-pen: yes/no
the actual questions are: what is better to write on the screen: stylus or a finger?

of course a stylus is better to write on a screen.
but i don't care about having a stylus in my next device.
i barely use the s-pen in my Note 4...

that's why i'm not going to upgrade to Note 7 for 850 EUR.
more likely to ZTE Axon 7 for 450 EUR (without the stylus)

I have never owned a Note (don't like big phones) but regarding the S-pen, is it not better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it?
