In my opinion the shortened shooting lag is a strong argument for the fixed focus. Often I miss situations due to that slow autofocus. And 50cm is close enough if you have a resolution of 8 MP. Thats OK for fotographing labels etc.

I still don't like full focus, depth is something needed if you actually want to take some photos with the device. N8 is for me.

if nokia are so fond of their cameras on c7, they should have put the same stuff on n8 and see the magic of their beloved FF camera. The sales wont even reach 25% of their current sales! They should have known that AF can be tricked to make a FF out of it but the reverse isn't just possible. You didn't smell the roses yet, did u nokia?

lol no shooting lag, you can also do that with an autofocus one, just half press the shutter to focus, then press it full whenever you like to take the shot, there'll be no shutter lag =P

and to those who are saying a cameraphone cannot replace a digital camera, think again, my current 5mp cameraphone takes better photos than my old 7.2mp cybershot digicam. Optical zoom? it's only useful if it has long range, but if it's just a meter or two, I'll just walk closer towards my subject then take the picture, much simpler.

Herocoder, 24 Nov 2010I had the K700i, then the K850i and the N82 .. and now onto... moreso you won't recommend the c7 because of the camera? how about for a regular joe who doesn't mind about the camera, just the mp3, net, and personalization? i don't have the c7 right now but i usually use a camera to pose with my gf or buddies (with a view of course) after a long days work, and post it at Facebook. Since majority of people won't really bother with the quality, i think c7 is a great phone unless you're a camera savvy then go for n8. people will never be satisfied. http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_c7-review-530p5.php

Also, how many of the AF camera users that don't really know how to use AF camera will set the focus to infinity? I'm guessing 0%. If you haven't noticed, there are lots and lots of people out there who get a sharp AF picture on maybe 1 out of 3 or worse. For the rest of us there is N8 ;)

I can't carry a camera anywhere i go, just in case i want to take a picture. I also don't want to carry a buch of cables for all the devices that i use. That's why i appreciate a good camera on my phone. Just to get on with the "buy a real camera" argument.

And ever since i'm given the title 8mp camera, i expect it to deliver what's obviously promished. A high quality photo. If not, put a 5mp on the damn phone and call it a day. Unless you don't mind fooling your customers...

to me its really a step backward, if anyone justifies fixed focus cameras with compactness than i would ask him
what the technology developement is all about?
answr to me (at the user end) is to produce more efficiency with less size,
although teir are some benifits of fix focus cameras are their bt those can never outweigh performance of autofocus cameras.

after great strugle nokia has managed to produce cameras which can compete with the market, but such downward moves will take nokia down.

strongly in favour of autofocus cameras on phones.

English is no... moreWhat you are saying is that most people cant use the internet so it doesnt matter whether the pc they buy has an old pentium 3 instead of the Dual-core processors thats the standard now! get real please .. if at all they want to do something abt it, they can set their camera settings on infinity focus by default.

This is plain crazy, I understand atleast Damian trying to defend it as he is a Nokia employee .. what abt u?

retry, 23 Nov 2010oh now the k850 became the best phone rather than nokia? Th... moreI had the K700i, then the K850i and the N82 .. and now onto N8.

why do you think I bought the N82 when I had the K850i?? cause it made better pictures. But what I loved abt the K850i was that it was great for clicking pics the autoshutter, the neon light around the lens, the user interface, the touch controls for the camera settings, am yet to see something as cool as that even given touch focus on other mobiles.

so dont change my words or assume something I didnt say .. I could anyday set my focus to infinity and do a fixed focus camera with it. Its just a matter of playing with the settings. The c7 can never do an autofocus and its no way a better camera.

Damian's arguement is like Old people cant use internet and they dont need a state-of-the art computer. No everyone who buys the C7 is a dumbass about camera for god sake. For the money I give out if I buy a C7 and also that it has a 8mp camera, I would expect it to have an AF. It doesnt and that sucks pretty much as simple as that. Its a dealbreaker or not for others I cant speak intelligently about that, but there is no way I would ever buy the C7 or recommend it.

Well if they are giving 8 mega pixels and can boast about it, at least make sure the image quality is good with good color and contrast. Don't give us over sharpened images like 2 MP images enlarged to 8 MP size in Photoshop. The loss in details is surely the result of such an attempt. If it is fixed focus, so be it.... but take care of the image quality.

or provide in the menu a close-up option for clicking closeup shots.

With all the billions nokia have and carl ziess at their disposal they shoiuld be designing a compact module lens that will work best in both close and far range photography, like the n8's one but smaller again so it can be used in the e7. cause the n9 has same formfactor as e7 and if they put the same dam camera in it, then nokia are screwed, the n9's cam either a 12mp or 8 should be and must be better than the e7 / c7 / c6-01 cameras.

English is not even my native english and I could understand what Damian Dinning is saying, I'm NOT SAYING THAT I AGREE, but his point is that most people are not nerd like everyone in here (including me), all they want is pick the mobile and shot instantly, without any fear of the picture be out of focus. Most people seems that don't even know that camera have a focus system. N8 is different, it's a true cameraphone made for enthuasists at "mobile photography", so OBVIOULY it should have auto-focus.
