i can remember a time when 128*128 pixel resolution cstn displays were the bee's knees. the nokia 6230 had a vga camera and i can distinctly remember one of my (idiot) friends advocating in favor of the phone vs those of a 3 mp canon camera. i admit, tehnology has come a long way since and i am writing this from my phone. but all this talk about this really good display tehnology is so much better than the other really good display tehnology is just plain stupid. as for the choice of cameras, each person is different and that's why there are so many phones available today. i couldn't care less if my phone had a camera.i would much rather like it if it had even the most basic of flashlights. i just don't see the point of arguing about the best display tehnology, when you have to have the two side by side to tell the difference. also, i have an olympus e420 with the pancake 25mm lens which is easily poketable and will knock any cameraphone into the middle of next year as far as quality is concerned. and the whole thing cost me less than a galaxy s...

I guess Nokia (or any other company) should go about giving people what's hot and in the trend. The image quality and loss of fine details is proof enough that the camera is below standards. I would rather have 5MP auto focus camera with Carl Zeiss lens rather than a 8MP fixed focus lens with a poor image quality. Nokia!!! give us what we want.

Kellard, 24 Nov 2010Why would they care about the AF camera on the N8 at all if... moreWhy do so many people fail on a simple comprehension test like this article?

There aren't that many big words in it right?

Nowhere does it say that Full focus (which is different from fixed focus, go read source for more) is better than AF.

The main two advantages are ease of use and smaller modules. Choose ten totally random people and let them take one picture with AF and one with Full Focus. The best picture will probably be with AF. On average though the full focus pics will be better.

Why? Because with Full Focus you can just press the button and there is close to zero chance of failure. That is why consumer phones have Full Focus and why people who are more interested in cameras can go with N8 and AF.

How about arguing against his actual points instead of ones you invent youself?

I do appreciate the speed of fixed-focus phone cameras - mostly because phone camera modules don't autofocus anywhere near as quickly as dedicated digicams (generally speaking) which takes away from the spontenaety a bit.

However when you get to 5MP and beyond, the quality difference is really noticeable - and at 50+cm so long as your subject is centred the chances (and results) of a mis-focus are so minimal.

I prefer autofocus, but fixed-focus does have the convenience and size advantage.
