Rendering 30+fps is Ideal for gamers.
The GPU is matter.
If GPU is capable to produce 30+fps, Then the more resolution the better.
This is an example of smoothness by rendering factor
MT6753 with its Mali-T720 MP3 in HD resolution is more powerful than
SD821 with its Adreno 530 in UHD resolution.
Mali-G71 MP8 inside the Kirin 960 SoC is the GPU which its output in FHD is 30+fps.
Adreno 430 inside the Snapdragon 810 results in 40+fps for HD.
For simple tasks, these numbers will sky rocket, but for complicated 3D Games, As speed matters, regardless of heating issue, SD810 with less detailed 720X1280 is much more favorable than K960 with relatively more detailed 1080X1920.
For Daily tasks which is more logical than playing AAA Games in a maximum 6.9" display, 10fps is enough and central processing power is more important.
For VR or AR capability, The resolution of UHD is Ideal. With current SoCs which are available in market, UHD displays will kill the speed of the handsets.
UHD needs at least, 3 times more powerful GPU in the next flagship SoC, in order to continue current smoothness of Android Flagships.
In a 3D Environment, maximum frames renders per second in UHD mode by current flagships are as follow:
A10 = 11fps
SD820/821 = 9fps
E8890 = 8fps
K960 = 7fps
HX20/25 = 3fps
*Tests were done in a controlled situation to meet maximum performance.
Which one of these are ready for UHD display to use for Virtual Reality?

OK I think for a seven inch phone it would make sense to have a 8k resolution just in case , oh wait

But anyways, regular Super AMOLED panels are great, you just have to get over 301 ppi. And they allow a reduced battery usage. Soon they'll conquer all mobile displays. They are already a must on wearables, so soon you'll have to either buy a cheap device with a MediaTek SoC and an LCD display, or a normal device with AMOLED and a Snapdragon/Exynos/Tegra/Kirin.

okay..my tech knowhow on screen is not very extensive but this is what i have seen...for the same size, an led screen like s7 does not show improvement in battery life if screen res is decreased, as the pixels lighting up are the same or very near that..true there is a decrease in gpu use but i'm not sure it will help in any other feature other than gaming..on an lcd lowering the res does help..like the z5 premium..as the screen is always backlit...anyone got any contributions to this??

Treating a 4 pixels as 1 pixel would not reduce power consumption as there are illuminated the same way as the 4 pixels one. There are still 4 pixel been light up. It is only when you completely shut off the other 3 pixels, then the power cunsumption of the 4 pixel will be treated as 1 pixel.

After starting developing apps/games for VR I can say that 2k with system option to change it to 1080/720.
Normally I would say 1080 is perfect, but most of new phones have screen bigger than 5inch so to get good VR experience phone need 2k, that in everyday usage would be set up to 1080.

The difference in screen resolution will have a significant impact unless there is complex 3d running, not when browsing or simple low res games or using apps. Perhaps might appear slightly when moving around in pdf and word documents and high res video at least

Like you said, every 4 pixel are treated as 1. BUT, that doesn't mean the pixels are gone. It's still there. There are still 4 pixels. Not 1.

"We also tested if selecting a lower display resolution (a new feature introduced by Android 7 Nougat) would have a positive impact on the battery life. We compared the battery performance using the native 1440p setting as well as the lowest available setting of 720p. The short answer is - the change in resolution didn’t affect any aspect of the battery life - not in our testing routine. The minor differences we recorded were in the minutes, and are well within the margin of error of the tests."

1080p / 720p? For battery saving?
Seriously, I have the OnePlus 3. My girlfriend has the Note 5. Her phone lasts about the same as mine. I don't think I have to tell you about screen / battery specs.
