Google has _never_ actually built a phone. The Pixel - look it up on Wikipedia. Nexus line - same. They may have designated the design/requirements for HTC on the Pixel - but they didn't build it. They have never been a hardware company, and to this day (since KitKat started bricking Nexus S phones), Google have struggled to release stable OS updates for "their" hardware.

I think this is a good move for both companies. Because let's face it HTC hasn't been doing so well in the past few years but still puts out some impressive hardware. Google was jumping around manufacturers with the Nexus line then finally unveiled the Pixel which was made for them by HTC. They have already been working pretty close anyway. I think HTC will make the smaller Pixel this year, and rumors have it that LG will make the bigger variant.

All i know is that next years Pixel is bound to be mind blowing in terms of design and features.. HTC has always been a pioneer when it comes to new tech or new ideas. They made the first Android device, first to mainstream front facing speakers, one of the first to try the dual camera set up back with the M8, camera with bigger Pixels (ultrapixel, M7), and their newest phone with the squeezable frame.. which this years pixel is rumored to have by the way.

Granted not all of HTC's ideas were executed well but we can't deny that a lot of them stuck around and basically opened up the door for other manufacturers to start doing them.

The whole nexus line-up was amazing and the pixel phone has been extremely critically acclaimed, some call it the best Android phone even today. Google really knows how to make amazing phones, back in the nexus days they were embarrassing all other Android OEMs. Today they all got better, but Google is still at the top when it comes to software and one of the best in hardware

isn't HTC's team in Taiwan? Is Google seriously gonna coordinate their hardware team from the US while they're in Taiwan? From a corporate stand-point, this is so obviously gonna be a shitshow. I bet you the vast majority of that engineering team can't even speak a word in english. They'll need to hire translators, send them there, pray they can get communication right.

I agree they needed a proper hardware team, but that was a terrible choice. Google couldn't even properly coordinate Motorola, which is a US company and they want to coordinate most of their hardware team in Taiwan? As I said, it's gonna be a disaster, at least at first.

AnonD-301832, 21 Sep 2017They (Sony) might be the next.Looool, then who is going to get new inventions into the smartphone world, whom is going to be copied by other manufacturers??

sa11oum, 21 Sep 2017I thought I read the new Pixels would be done by LG? Anyway... moreYes the New Pixel will be built by LG But that will be the Pixel XL 2 with the Infinity Display

The Smaller Pixel 2 Will be Built by HTC

Hence Pixel will have 2 Different Manufacturers this year

Also this deal with HTC won't effect the Pixel 2 Family in any way as the devices are already close to release

GSM Arena, it's spelled Osterloh, not Osterlog. Same guy who worked for Motorola that helped design the original Moto X with brilliant concepts like raise to wake (Active Display) that Apple copied, always listening, Moto Maker, etc.

It's just a mild takeover to HELP THAT COMPANY. I mean seriously, Google bought Motorola for $12.5B and then sold it for only $2.9B to Lenovo a couple years later. They basically paid $9.6B just for old patents to protect themselves from Microsoft's royalties and a patent troll like Apple. Remember, Nokia was one of the few to defeat Apple in court.

$1.1B is chump change. That's still less than half than when Google sold Motorola to the Chinese. I want to see a Moto X/HTC One M7 collaboration. Take the best from both phones from 2013 and update it for 2018. M7 and Moto X were two of the best to be released that year. The talent from HTC was lost years ago though. The same design team that did the M7 were no longer around when the HTC 10 was made.

This article means in short that HTC is still alive but sold its soul to the devil

Google wants make it´s own chips, Apple already designed your CPU and now are making your own GPU, if you look any benchmark, the iPhone always win in single core performance, and the most of apps still single core dependant, maybe this will make the Android fragmentation smaller, but this is a very strange move.
Samsung and Huawei already make your own chip, Samsung with Exynos and Huawaei with Kirin.
In iOS world the GPU are divided in two, PowerVR and Apple, in Android World there is a few like, Adreno, Tegra, PowerVR, Mali, Vivante, Novathor, etc.

Interesting. Let's see where this heads.....

RickGH, 21 Sep 2017“...google is not a charity organisation that it will Spend... moreThat doesn't mean google Will start spending money to keep it's OEMs Business Afloat .

If one OEM runs out of business 10 new ones will be born

We don't have 100 alternative mobile operating systems that 100 OEMs will use Android Doesn't need it's OEMs anymore it is the one dominating the market and anyone who switches from it will have to close it's doors

Nokia Tried Windows Mobile For a long time and had to shut down it's operations

Today Nokia is back with Android Not any other Os .In reality it's OEMs that need Android and Not Google

Also google Doesn't make any money from Android It's an open source operating system what it makes money is from the google apps and services

How old are brands like Xiaomi ,Huawei [Mobile Division] ,Oppo ,Vivo ,One plus etc etc These brands are today the top selling OEMs and Google Doesn't have to do anything or cares about the legacy OEMs

If legacy OEMs shut shop New will be born

And please don't be mistaken that Android is popular Because of OEMs

Android is successful because of its Apps and the fact that it is an open source operating system which has been built by the hardwork of devs not OEMs

I thought I read the new Pixels would be done by LG? Anyway this a good move for both companies. HTC make good hardware and Google don't, HTC can't sell a phone to save their lives and Google are decent in marketing.
