Rumored Snapdragon 845 specs point to next-gen Kryo cores, but old process

30 November 2017
The new chip will allegedly stick to the old 10nm LPE process like the one used in the S835.

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2017That's business, who would purchase the lower specs chipset... moreNope, that's not business. If what you're saying is true, than all phones will be SD835 not anything else, because it's a better chip. Even if Qualcomm released an SoC better than Apple's A11 Bionic, other weaker chips will still have a market. They will sell. Why? Because companies release different phones for different audience. Some phones are mid-range, some are flagships, some are low-end. SoC makers make chips for all categories. Not just one.

Your point is irrelevant.

Yes, the Note8 maybe is faster in app opening speed, but it's not smoother. I personally would prefer to have smoother animations than faster ones. But everyone's taste is different so I get your point.

Well expects similar CPU performance to Apple A9 from iphome 6s. Good job qualcomm, you only more than two year behind competition

I remember being blown away with its camera prowess. It was the talk of the town back then. It even had one of the most legible screen under direct sunlight.

Anonymous, 01 Dec 2017Technically Qualcomm or Samsung can definitely reverse engi... moreForget about reverse engineering, they can build a CPU faster than the a11, starting from scratch. Why they don't do that is because that will exponentially increase the cost as they have to make the size of SOC roughly double and not to mention increase the number of transistors. Apple can do that because whatever extra investment they do on SOC, they extract 10 times of that from other components they deploy as they sell the entire product unlike qualcomm.

I wish journalists stopped putting up with Qualcomms messy marketing naming and called it what it is - a pure A75 core. Then everyone would simply known its +20% to pure performance and almost +50% in burst perf for web.

Calling it a Kryo core is simply confusing, as it implies its a Qualcomm custom core, which it is not. It is a decent upgrade from ARM that every stock ARM chip OEM will also have next year.

AnonD-708613, 01 Dec 2017Real question though, can it win apple A11? Dont tell me af... moreNo. It can't compete with the A11, and in fact it will almost reach A10's performance in Single-Core tests (very important) but surpass it in Multi-Core tests (less important).

This is mostly because Apple's mobile chips are huge in die size compared to Qualcomm's Snapdragon SoC's. Not to mention all that large (super-fast and expensive) cache they put inside the CPU's.

However, since Ax chips can't run Android and QSD chips can't run iOS, they aren't really direct competitors.

It's great that android phones are developing in all the other way, but like it or not processor speeds have stagnated. And it's not because he have reached some technological limit or anything similar (Apple processors are flying high), it's mostly that Qualcomm is in dire straits *and* a defacto monopoly meaning that each and every one of us have to go though Qualcomm's issues.

Meaning in turn that we won't be seeing advance functions that are common place on iphones coming anytime soon on android. From powerful deep learning tecniques running directly on your phone, to pattern recognition, to AR to high end games to Instagram filters even... compute power is not just about "smoothness", it's about doing stuff that need it.

Modern androids are what consoles are on gaming, and Apple is like PC. Doing the latest and greatest first.

It's sad because up until 2014, things were not so. Then again back then there were plenty of SoC options ... Qualcomm killed them and along came the stagnation... simple, sad ... but simple.

The difference is NOT night and day from one device to another.
much better camera ? No. U11 manual mode ISO peeged to 800, while on HTC10 you can play up to 1600.
                                      better screen ? Slightly, yes.
more beautiful device ? Depends, I prefer solid tank build of HTC10 than fragile u11 which I have to babysit everytime.
much better battery life (with same battery) ? YES!
LIttle more smooth than the htc10 ? NO, my u11 FPS doesn't work several times has to double tap to unlock the screen, never happen with htc10.
Any sd660 and up are more than enought for every day use with no delay? NO,you will be lagging on heavy FPS games.
For games by a console please..are cheaper and better ? NO, that would cost me extra and I don't want to go carrying too many stuff.

If I were to get HTC U12,probably more for bragging rights and aesthetic stuff, trimmed bezel over u11+ which I consider still TOO BIG BEZEL compared to other 6" screen like LG V30 or iPhone X. I hate curved Samsung screen tho. Makes 18:9 phone TOO NARROW like TV remote, beause they have zero side bezels.

And maybe expect U12 has better dual camera to compete with samsung and apple...

                                      Silly? Perhaps
Android has matured, can't expect the old feeling of great excitement back on the early days... Sad and bored.
