They HAD to copy the iPhone design right? They couldn't think of anything else? And man, even for a mid-ranger, HD+ resolution on a 6" is pretty poor.

(I exaggerated a bit but you got the idea)
- That's a psychological trick that manufacturers use to make people buy newer devices !
Just because you are on android X and now there is announced android X+2, does not mean your phone no longer works as well as it did before.
IMO what matters most about software on a phone are the proprietary features created by the OEM specifically for the hardware inside the phone.
Things like S Note, Camera app, Adapt display, Boom sound etc are what defines a device and they do not necessarily get better or worse with new versions of android.
Security updates are hardly as relevant for consumers as they are made to seem. Google Play Protect does a great job and unless you specifically "look for trouble" you won't find it.
The only area where you could maybe feel a tangible improvement compared to an older version of android is speed. But the difference is pretty small nowadays and most phones would feel fast enough anyway.

Honestly rooting an older flagship would be a better solution, even if it does take more time. They have better specs and a more active ROM presence.

you will not get same security updates, or more updates than an android 8 with treble support (in theory). only a few brands update their devices more than 1/2 years. so buying a last year or 2 year flagship, you will stop seeing updates when you buy the phone. if you know a thing or two about root then you can enjoy your phone for a long time..but that will cost you time...and time is money in my book.

These got to be one of the worst value for money I've ever seen !
Never buy such a low end phone! It will only end in frustration.
There are flagships from last years you can get at similar prices with much much better specs and features.
What's funny is in my country you could get a HTC U ULTRA for the same price as this desire 12+ crap !

Still doesn't explain the lack of a fingerprint scanner for the smaller model (which is still not small, definitely has room to fit one). Also, HTC had plenty of years delivering some of the best quality 1080p LCDs around, what makes you think it'll be bad? I guess I can only hope they'll make a higher spec series with this design.

Crap tech for € 200. they could have made a design reminiscent of the HTC One M8 with the dual cam because they were first and the M8 is their thing to show it off. But instead, they just blandly copied the iPhone 7/8 and iPhone 7+/8+ style of camera placement with those two phones

In this article, images of the Desire 12 show it using Sense icons from Nougat, unlike the Desire 12+ which uses Oreo Sense icons. Based on the fact that the U11 Eyes (which I own) shipped with Nougat 7.1.2 in 2018 a month after the U11+ came out with Oreo, I wouldn't be surprised to see Desire 12/Nougat and Desire 12+/Oreo. And if you're considering the Desire 12 with the notion that it'll eventually get updated to Oreo, consider this.. I recently spoke to an HTC customer service rep in Hong Kong who said that the company currently has no plan to update the U11 Eyes to Oreo. Yes, that's right, they won't be updating a premium mid-ranger that should have had Oreo to begin with. So, how much interest are they going to have in updating a budget mid-ranger like the Desire 12?
