Huawei found tampering with benchmark results, says it had to

05 September 2018
An official said competitors do it too, so the company “cannot stay silent”.

Yes totally agree, the benchmark tests for smartphones are analogous to MPG/range in cars. Volkswagen got in trouble for the same shenanigans a couple years ago. Yet all car companies and phone makers do all they can to make their numbers look good. I have to forgive them in that light because the alternative is numbers that look bad, and potential buyers put off by statistics.

All that really matters is "real world" performance but somehow most tests don't account for that, except in reviews by actual humans. More reason to ignore standard test results and listen to a first-hand user.

AnonD-771260, 06 Sep 2018It's not only about Huawei but about all Chinese companies.... morenot only chinese, look at Apple with the deliberate throttling issue. They all have underhanded techniques to either push u to buy the latest model or wow you with numbers, Chinese, American, European, all the same corporate thing to to sell more.

The germans in the auto world as well haha

you disappointed me huawei...you are dead to me now

Personally, don't care about benchmarks because they only test the speed of the hardware but don't take into consideration the software and UI running the device. Sure, you have a 10k score in Geekbench but then your phone is slow and laggy because the UI and Launcher is a pile of $hit because of the amount of bloat. I'd rather have a phone that has 7000 Geekbench score that runs smoothly 100% of the time than a phone with 10k Geekbench score but lags half the time.

Of course, it's really kind of true that most companies cheat on Geekbench, like Oneplus for example and who is to say that even Apple and Samsung isn't doing it. False advertising is pretty much the norm nowadays. Take that water-resistance feature. Companies will claim that their phone is water-resistant but then refuse to honor warranties based on water damage.

Basically, this race for higher Geekbench and Benchmark scores is like saying "my di€k is bigger than yours, therefore it is better".

AnonD-771260, 06 Sep 2018It's not only about Huawei but about all Chinese companies.... moreAs if Apple doesn't use very cheap labour in China too...

Huawei phones have been very consistently good on specs and real life usage, with the exception of their GPU (hopefully they fixed it with the new Kirin 980)
One more outstanding commendation for Huawei is consistent with their software updates for their flagship devices. It is sad that GSMarena doesnt report them.

That's a pretty misleading headline you've got there.

Anyhoo, no one should take mobile benchmarks serious. I'd say most manufacturers use benchmark optimisation. A few years ago Apple hired the founder of that mentioned Anandtech and Apple's "performance" went through the roof a year or two later. It's a lot easier to cheat uninhibited when your system and hardware is closed source.

Imperator Neubaticus, 06 Sep 2018Basically huawei is saying that everybody does it so we're ... moreWell they are right, actually. If their results are way behind the competition (Due to non-cheating) and they say "well the competition are cheaters, don't believe them, our phones are not slower", would you take them seriously (Despite the fact that they'll probably be right)?

There is no escape the laws of the universe.

Circuits included. CPU can only work that fast. Battery can only last that long.

If you see relatively the same specs.. you do not need to brag benchmarks.

The only time specs does not help.. is comparing Android to iOS.

And sadly but very cheap labour is one of the reasons.

Practically all the top android phone brands tamper or have tampered with benchmark tests at one time or another. That includes Samsung,
Huawei, Oneplus, etc. Benchmark scores especially those from Antutu are way overhyped and are given more credit and importance by naive users who don't know anything about what matters the most in one's phone experience (battery) and by phone manufacturers who exploit a user's ignorance by using those figures to sell/promote their phones as the 'fastest' and 'most powerful'. It's the same strategy used in phone camera performance where 'DXOmobile' comes up with ever increasing ratings for phones, making naive users think that dedicated dSLR cameras are already inferior compared to flagship phone cameras. The fact is, flagship phones are already more than fast enough for their intended use. In fact, they're faster than the mind of a user who don't quite get how those utra high 100,000++ Antutu figures still matter and how the differences among phones sporting those Antutu benchmark score ranges can still impact the everyday user experience. All the ultra high sores achieve are better bragging rights, like, 'I own the fastest car in the world'. Unfortunately, you only experience it in the race track and it doesn't perform as well in busy city roads in everyday use. If you must brag, buy jewelry instead, not some ultra high Antutu benchmarked phone or a dubiously high Dxomobile rated phone.

That's why I'm really skeptical about Huawei phones. I don't even know if I can trust the company for my day to day usage. Lots say Samsung lags but my Note 8 has been serving me well. And I mean very very well! No lags or whatsoever. The new Samsung Experience is really really good. China phone makers. Can't trust them at all.

They just input the car's parameters into the computer and it calculates the MPG in perfect conditions: no wind, flat surface, good traction, good fuel, etc.

Its not false readigns, the high scores show what the Kirin chipsets are capable of.

Its like usain bolt, he is the fastest man in the world. But he doesnt always run everywhere like crazy... he keeps the best performance to show off on the track. He isnt deceiving anyone either...
