Are gaming phones needed or should we stick to regular flagships instead?

Look gentlemen. Gaming phones are mainly for the asian market and that's where the customer base is.
As for myself. I enjoy playing War Robots, Pubg mobile and some Unreal 4 based mmos. They all are quite demanding. So the option to get a good gaming phone is interesting.

The Dude, 10 Sep 2018Get a lifeI think she got one ( outside of the home, and just not staying home & play game all day ) when she said train ( you know, going somewhere on a public transportation )

If you are going somewhere ( with a long hours of transportation time)and you are a passenger, what's wrong with playing mobile games if you're going to sit for hours?

imparanoic1, 10 Sep 2018generally my ps vita don't gather dust, my 3ds xl gathers m... moreSo, you do see the problem of the handheld console?
You know. What you've just mentioned are pretty much ( $$$$$ ) to continue to make the PS Vita not a trash!( Sadly).

Don't get it wrong, I don't hate the PS Vita. It's just Sony is so crappy when it comes to PS Vita ( not much marketing in the NA region, and not a lot of games)
And unless you are not doing anything and just play every games that PS plus gift/give you( which I don't think anyone can). It is such a waste of money/time.

Gathering games is pointless ( and that you've also point out the storage problem for Sony's device, from console to phones). The PSP to PS Vita's storage factor shows how fxxking greedy Sony is ( their own card and it is super expensive, and there's no alternative!)

I've got a few games on my PS Vita ( some are purchase without much review which I kind of regret later on). But, after I've finished a few that I really like, there wasn't much game(s) I like available ATM. So I gave up ( that's years ago). The game I got *child of light* , *gravity rush* , *Uncharted game*. I got a SAO game which I end up disliking it later on and another JRPG with a different fighting style.

There's a reason that people wanted to hack Sony's console ( PSP, Vita). Cause it is just too ridiculous for Sony to treat their fans like that.

Even until now, I still think that if Sony change the platform/OS of the console, that would make it much more successful ( they already fxxk it up by not making the Vita able to play any PSP game when they release the Vita, adding new function to the new console shouldn't make the game stop working, cause the usual function/ mechanism of the game is still the same. )

looked like a marketing gimmick at first - cashing in on kids who already own similar branded laptops and/or desktop pc stuff, but maybe they're trying to create a niche for more 'hardcore' gaming to thrive on mobile?

                  No.
Just get yourself a good phone with a decent price and good processor like a OnePlus or PocoPhone and a cheap gamepad with phone support from China and you are better and cheaper than the false "gaming phones".
Maybe they will start to deserve the "gaming" name when the hardware will include some kind of gamepad and real other useful "accessories".
Remember the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY. That was a radical step towards a gaming phone. It's been 7 years and the technology has evolved a lot. Why can't someone evolve a similar design to that and bring it to today's standards and performance?

                        do we really need iphones?
(or just see ballmer's comments about 'em back then)

not saying this will go the way of iphones, not at all, but there is a huge huge market potential for these 'gaming' phones if marketed right

Its a simple matter of not having good enough games on android/iOS than PC/consoles.

Plus ARM has made it its business to optimize for "thumbs" and touchscreens. Ask any gamer who also owns a gaming laptop: does he uses his touchpad for CS:GO or Battlefield or CoD?

The solution here, to me, is simple: bring back Xperia Play like designs with triggers and slide out controls and actually have games, that are really interesting. Hack ports of older games too wpuld work (but that'd lead the debate ultimately to emulation,so i'm not going there)

Ideally if with proper,in built hardware,we could have somewhat optimized games that are running on current gen (or last gen) other gaming platforms. Then i think, gaming phones could actually have some relavance.

Personally i don't need or want a 'gaming' phone with the current state of mobile games. And if i want to play pubg or fortnite i have the option of doing it on a big screen with proper controls.

It's like the pulp theory when first pulp was invented it lasted too long so they needed to reinvent it to last less time. In US there is a fire station that have one pulp light up over 100 years by now.

For me, I don't like to buy phones yearly, which is why I miss removable batteries. Next best thing is what some of these gaming phones are doing with cooling and making it moderately difficult to replace the battery. You're completely right, but I think about over time.

Alien , 10 Sep 2018In max 10 years we'll be using nanotechnology in PCs. Size ... moreI don't think technology will change that much in just 10 years. For decades, even laptops have been much more expensive than equivalent desktop PCs, and for smartphones it's even worse, since you pay a lot more for much slower processors than on typical PCs. Miniaturization costs a lot, and I don't have any reasons to think that it will change in just 10 years.

When it comes to controlling a device with your thoughts, currently the technology is extremely primitive, it can't really replace normal input methods. Maybe in 10 years it will be possible if there's some breakthrough, but I think it's unlikely. Technology is improving quickly, but not THAT quickly.

As for keyboard and mouse, it's not a dying niche, since currently there's nothing better that could replace it. Touchscreens are common, but not because they are better, but because they are more convenient for tiny mobile devices. However, they are much less accurate than a physical keyboard and a mouse. I'd totally welcome a better alternative to a keyboard and mouse, but it doesn't exist yet.
