Alien , 10 Sep 2018I'm not saying I want a gaming smartphone, but I definitely... moreOh man I hear you.. switched to full mobile 5 years ago. Dumped my PC and never looked back.
My Note 8 (soon to be replaced by the Note 9) is just an addictive joy to use. By far more convenient and satisfying for reading articles and browsing than any PC or laptop ..even movie watching is a blast on that stunning screen.

Tonberry, 10 Sep 2018There's no way a phone could replace a PC. A phone would be... moreIn max 10 years we'll be using nanotechnology in PCs. Size will be irrelevant then.
And you'll be able to "think" and translate the thoughts into actions on your PC.
There are already technologies out there that are used through the power of the mind - army pilots have something similar in their helmets. This is based on frequencies if I'm not mistaken.
I'm not saying they'll completely disappear, I'm saying there will be other alternatives and technologies that still seem out of sci-fi today, but in the future they'll be all around us.
The keyboard and the mouse are a dying niche as well.

          However. There's no such thing as a perfect phone. The closest we get is Note 9 ^^;

Alien , 10 Sep 2018I'm not saying I want a gaming smartphone, but I definitely... moreThere's no way a phone could replace a PC. A phone would be totally unusable for any kind of productivity, and much worse for gaming (even a gamepad is much less convenient than keyboard+mouse and a big screen in front of you, and phone cpu/gpu is much slower than PC hardware). Even if all someone does is browse social media all day, having a real keyboard and big screen is still much more convenient.

And even if you connect PC peripherals to a phone (a real keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc), it will still be a lot slower than an equivalent PC.

Anonymous, 10 Sep 2018let me ask that differently: do we really need phones? I'm ... morePhones are more a tool of managing everything technically. The memos, meetings, alarm, the music, vids. Just remember that about 15 years ago we had to carry like 8 items to have the whole mumbo jumbo and today we have everythint in one device.
As for your question: do we "need" it? Is it a survival "necessity"? Ofcourse not. But it does make our lives easier. So it's more about "wanting" it instead of "needing" it.
As for removable battery yes. I personally think it is a neccessity as it reduces E-waste.

Only the richest will buy the legit gaming phones wi... moreIn my opinion, I don't think it's all about the wealth, it's more like if they're brainwashed by this kind of marketing gimmick. I will stop calling it a marketing gimmick, if these brands collaborate with Qualcomm and manufacturer a custom chipset in a whole new architecture different from high-end chipsets that's one level higher than high-end chipsets, or at least provide more features that stand out from the competition as gaming smartphones...

Typically when Pc components have "gaming" in the title, that usually means they're cheaper, targeting a minority in a business usually doesn't lead to success.

imparanoic1, 10 Sep 2018generally my ps vita don't gather dust, my 3ds xl gathers m... moreSony could give away the Vita but it will still flop because the games are not free.

Those who praise the PSP... most of them run pirated ISO of games they do not own.

Call them out and they will play the homebrew card lmao.

Funny how the results are now, considering changes they made to ordinary phone and not just on inside. Phones turned out to have boring looks and there is a little they do to increase performance. Sony as example went overboard with camera chips, but I do not hear about them doing so for gaming, though it should be as important as their camera business considering active players on PS. They should move their phones to better game performance and gaming looks a long before gaming on phones became bigger business than on consoles. They could embrace VR too. And its not just Sony that lags, Every brand style and inards(with a few exceptions) looks like men in black in matrix, not atanding out just plain boring copies. Performance was limited to chip and different try at cooling made a little difference, as if not done seriously.
We should thank the gaming ones with trying to move that neutral stance.

Both sides gave good arguments so I'll withold from giving a vote.

Here's my take - the main issue is Android gaming ecosystem absolutely ruled by an overwhelming amount of f2p touch tailored titles.
Fortnite and PUBG show that there is a space for games with physical controls, but ironically, neither of them offer the controller option.

So my answer is- never mind gaming phones, we need a paradigm shift where devs start to mass- release console and PC ports and produce true AAA games on Android.
GTA San Andreas proves that enough people are ready to actually pay(despite of the insane pirating rate) relatively small sum for such games to make the investment well worth it.
And Nintendo Switch proves that mobile hardware is perfectly capable of running true modern AAA games.

Bottom line, Android and mobile market in general holds a MASSIVE potential still left untapped by the devs..but the stagnation and oversaturation of casual f2p model is apparent so here's hoping they finally see the light.

For me this phones are not about gaming, this is th only one segment left that still tries to do innovations (modular design, great screen, better cooling etc) instead of degradation (notch, 3.5 jack removing, dozen camera madness) and they still have their own face (instead of notched glass sandwich)

                                  Yes.
Because all SoCs using current cooling systems Throttle during long gaming sessions in heaviest games. All of them: Qualcomm, Apple, Samsung, Huawei.

We need pressure to develop bettee cooling.

Gaming phones with throttling tests are one such pressure to manufacturers.

I'm not saying I want a gaming smartphone, but I definitely want a very powerful device.
The ideal phone running full-blown Linux would be the end of PC's as we know them.
Since I've started using flagship smartphones, I barely turn on the PC anymore. It's gathering dust like a useless object.
The only time I turn it on is when I want to work in Photoshop or Android Studio.
But in maximum 2 years we'll be able to do that also.
                                    So long PCs!

They're for a small market I'd say. The handheld gaming devices disappeared ages ago and there are no signs of them anymore. Gaming-specific phones are exactly pretty much a gimmick.
Flagships run the games just as good. Perhaps there is still a market for them, if they keep releasing new ones!

But hey, that's just my opinion.
