Are gaming phones needed or should we stick to regular flagships instead?

let me ask that differently: do we really need phones? I'm sure we don't. Then why do we need 3-5 camera phones? Do we need that? Exchangable battery? Do we need that? Gaming phones are a niche just like 5 camera phones, so it's pretty fine. Thinking about a razer phone next, if there other products weren't as sh*t...I had so many and was always dissapointed.

Gaming phones? Not that useful, unless you want to emulate old games.

FromChinaWithLove, 10 Sep 2018Gaming phone or not, difference between it is rather or not... moregenerally my ps vita don't gather dust, my 3ds xl gathers more dust, why? cos with ps plus, i gained around 70 ps vita indie games, 30 class aaa games and another 30 ports, added the fact, i also use ps vita to play officially purchase ps1 and psp downloads on top of that.

every console has it's good triple aaa games, but other aspects such as good battery life and remote play needs to be taken in consideration

while i do think 1st party games are a bit thin in certain genres, rpgs are plentiful on ps vita, really decent ones, it's a shame, if sony marketed better, ie, used proper sd cards, allow cheaper ps1 and psp games, maybe it would been more successful.

no phone is worthy enough to have gaming phone title, until they slap built in game-pad on it (Nokia N-Gage and Sony xperia xPLAY)

while chinese ( and taiwanese) phone manufacturers are producing mobile gaming phones with no support for external controllers to cater market for masses who player touch screen gaming, external controllers offer significant advantages with tactile feedback and precise input which don't really exist with touch screens.

what one of these phone manufacturers should do, partner with japanese arcade developers such as sega, konami, irem and capcom and licence real arcade rom emulation for games from the 90s as niche market for retro gamers exist, look how sucessfully nintendo marketed snes mini and nes mini, even snk are getting decent response for neo geo mini, they could update firmware for plug and play controllers such as sony ps4 dual shock controller with xperia phones, companies who specialise in controllers such as hori or 8bitdo can provide official controllers

Honestly gaming phones isn't necessary and definitely a gimmick. Any high end phone can do just as good of a job as these phones. 120hz screens that small? Honestly the quality of mobile games are definitely better than they were 5 years ago, but is still not justifiably good enough for something like a gaming phone. There is a hand full of games that actually push decent graphics and even then its short bursts of play time. 8gb of ram as well wont make a huge difference to having 4 or 6 in these games either. I tested them out and there is just not a big deal. MAYBE the games load a tad faster but seriously? Im not paying crazy prices so my games can run 2fps faster and load 0.4 seconds faster. Madness. Oh lets not forget cooling. Not a big one. In such small chassis no cooling will keep a phone more cooled than what is currently on the market. All pure gimmicks to me.

Macbeth, 10 Sep 2018I've seen some gaming phones released in 2004! (I'm talking... moreNokia N-Gage.

Gaming phone is currently just a marketing gimmick, we need more powerful SoCs, higher refrest rate displays which are actually usuable, advanced cooling and humungous batteries and obviously games which actually require all these things, I think Qualcomm and other chipmakers should make SoCs which are aimed at gaming and are atlest 2x more powerful than current gen flagship SoC like make a Snapdragon G1 which is 2x more powerful than 845 and all this power will require huge batteries and advanced cooling to keep the gaming session long and.performance sustainable which will force OEMs to put huge batteries and advance coolings and with available hardware developers will target those hardwares making games which are unplayable or laggy on current top grade chips and we will finally get Gaming Phones

Gaming phones aren't called 'gaming phones' for no reason. They have a very powerful chip along with also a very powerful gpu allowing you to play the most demanding titles at a smooth buttery framerate. I personally don't care about the visual aesthetics, but some people do. So they got it. Look at the Black Shark and the ROG Gaming Phone. Crazy RGB and design.

So yes, I think that gaming phones DO deliver just that much better gaming experience.

If you're gamer just buy gaming PC not gaming phone. Consoles are good but PC gaming is much better.

With the kind of amount they are charging in the name of gaming phones, one can simply buy a console and a few games and enjoy gaming faar better than these smartphones can ever provide.

Of course not. Gaming on mobile plainly sucks. Gaming is best experienced on a PC or a console. Most mobile games aren't worth playing, and just time killers.

Gaming on 'phones is cool if you want to game on he go in the first place.

Bigger battery and stereo speakers are welcome addition.

In my personal opinion: no, we don't need dedicated gaming phones. We just need common sense to come back to phone makers, have them make phones with small (not non-existent) bezels that can be held with one hand, aren't slippery and don't cost a fortune. Dual speakers won't hurt, bigger batteries are welcome. As for gaming - I don't game on the go any more, I game on my PC (thinking of getting a dedicated console, but I'm not there yet).

Phone should do one thing great: make phone calls. Everything else is a bonus (in my case Samsung Galaxy S7 has some nice bonuses, especially that plastic UAG case, which I absolutely love - it saved my phone several times and makes using and holding it much easier than original "glass on the front, glass on the back" thing).

My main complaints on gaming phones:
                                      - expensive, because, duh, gamers pay extra!
                                      - have gimmicks of their own (I, for one, don't need "better cooling", I'd rather have lower resolution screen and weaker hardware that doesn't overheat in the first place)
                                      - expensive (did I mention that yet?)
