Sunday debate: Do we really need gaming phones?

Are gaming phones needed or should we stick to regular flagships instead?

we need professional looking phone with liquid cooling but optional accessories for gaming mode with added battery and shoulder button and trigger button. who;s with me on this?

Only the richest will buy the legit gaming phones with cooling system benefits and clocked speeds.

Same here too, "gaming" phones don't really attracted my attention. As what I've said earlier, all smartphones can game.
Only the hardest core gamers like to buy such powerful devices.

They're just adding the... moreI'm not feeling the hype of gaming smartphones really, other than the better cooling system and the overclocked chipset, there's isn't anything that really stands out as a gaming smartphone. Plus, gaming brands are heading towards the point where they don't use gaming centric designs, but instead they use designs that suit both gamers and business owners

We need good games, that benefit from having a touchscreen on our device ... or AR, VR games.
We do not need another subpar FPS, 3rd person, platformer PC port.

So in general, we don't really need gaming phones, because good games on iOS and Android don't even need powerfull SOC.

          no
          we likes perfect phones

Gaming phone or not, difference between it is rather or not the OEM really does make a proper flagship phone.

This is coming from someone who is using a Sony's flagship phone ( late 2016 flagship , xperia XZ).
1 less GB or RAM really does make it a hugh different when comes to playing games and handling other apps. The slow down and lag because of the heat and not enough RAM( performance different of phones are vary by OEM) .
Remember that the Nokia/Microsoft Windows phone got liquid cooling ahead of other phones, and that's 2015. But, no other OEM willing to follow right after that.

Now, all of sudden, the so call gaming phone appears with just a better specs. And that make it a gaming phone?
I enjoy playing mobile games on my phone, but I don't agree with the so call gaming phone ( just a phone with better specs year by year, and that they're finally willing to put more tech into the phone).

If every OEM from now on are making phones with these tech as standard ( then you don't need a gaming phone, cause every flagship will be a gaming phones, because everyone are using the same tech, just a different OS tweak ).

BTW, since someone talk about PS Vita, and as someone who purchased one long ago ( now collecting dust). How I wish that Sony would have made the PS Vita with the Android OS ( the PS OS to run games is just platform, so why not a Android OS). But, I do understand the worry of gaming getting pirates it which it will end up on most phones for free!

Otherwise, PS Vita ( Sony) would have make hugh succeed.

I am not interested in games, but i'm willin gto buy a gaming phone like the one Asus have due to the better functionality and not being a useless fashionphone, which 99% of phones are. Good speakers, good cooling, additional ports and better desktop integration - thingsthat matter with or without games.

The chipset isn't everything. A good gaming phone should have a flagship chipset AND other features that make up a good gaming phone. Instead of being thin and fragile, it should be grippier, thicker (for better comfort and potentially longer battery life) and made to be durable. Front facing speakers would be great, as well as screens with quick response times, fast storage, and good wireless performance.

                      >And secondly, there aren't many games to support displays above 60Hz making the 120Hz panel on the Razer Phone useless

lol? A game running at 30fps on a phone is going to look much nicer on a 120hz screen than it does on a 60hz one. Have you ever used a high refresh rate monitor?

Voted yes because if not for internals... atleast you can distinguish these from the sea of lookalikes. Plus; NO NOTCH and headphone jack!

I dunno why but I feel like slamming in that PS Vita II a Snapdragon 845 with 4 GB of RAM and 1 GB of dedicated Graphics ram with 64 GB of storage will be a gurgantuan leap~!
(Just think about it. The previous generation used a Quad core cortex A9 ticking at 1.3 GHz
Merely 512 MB of ram, 128 MB of dedicated VRAM
The graphics is a measly PowerVR SGX543MP4+
And it has 1 GB of storage with a 5inch display that is qHD (yes. Smaller q: 540x960!)
I don't want the display to grow by a lot. 5 is perfectly fine for a vita. However it does need some computational boost)

just wondering to any xperia phone owners, can you use your xperia phone with ps4 dual shock 4 controller for drones? if even possible, any vr mode?

In my opinion gaming phones without any added feature that enriches the gaming experience is a gimmick, but the Xperia Play back in the day had proper buttons (at least better than touchscreen)...

Right now the only other proper gaming phone in my opinion is the Asus ROG Phone... The shoulder buttons and the extra USB-C port is no gimmick and it surely improves the experience.

Other than that, the other regular features that, IMO makes a phone better at gaming is:

                                    Obviously SOC
Stereo Front Facing Speakers ("front" being the key word, for avoiding blocking the sound)
                                    Big battery
                                    Big storage
                                    3.5mm Jack
                                    Better cooling

And the problem here is that only very few devices tick all these boxes...

So, right now the only proper gaming phone for me is the ROG... Because Razer made it to "normal"...

As for games that gives you a similar PC experience, well obviously old ports like GTA, Bioshock, etc... And some Gameloft games are actually very good... And it goes without saying that your can also emulate (PSP, Gameboy, N64, etc) many old-but-gold offerings.

My 7 y/o kid plays NES, SNES and GB games with my old Xperia Acro S (2012) and he even enjoys playing it on TV with its microHDMI port and a paired Wii controller.

Apple has better offerings, but I love the hardware options you get with Android and a lot of features years before Apple implements them.

I don’t see why any should be excluded from the party. Both have their target audiences and the smartphone market is big and varied. Like many others, I agree that Sony XZ2 with the rumble pack can pass off as a “gaming” phone and vice versa, I think the Razer phone can aslo be called a “non-gaming” flagship.

Personally I wish all future flagships regardless whether gaming or not will have great dual speakers, big batteries & 120hz screens as standard.

And yea, Sony should absolutely make a proper fully featured flagship gaming phone or a new PS Vita handheld

Sony could've done this in a much better way. They could release a phone that has compatibility and can play PS2, PSP and Vita and BOOM! Instant cash grab. Half-joking aside, until there is a better alternative for the lithium-ion (looking at you solid state battery, please don't disappoint), I feel like even if mobile chipsets and operating systems are becoming more efficient to save power we're still only looking at a day or two of use on a smartphone before having to recharge (with the exception of the beast known as Mi Max 2).
