Yann, 30 Nov 2018This "true legend", as you wrote it, abandon the headphone ... moreAbandoned the jack for they thought it would make them more competitive by following the trend, which people have always asked for Sony to do so. I imagine having this feature back won't change things up, as people will always pick the more popular brand despite the major compromises.

Their camera sensors are seriously the best, but they didn't make it very good in order to keep a separation of their standalone mirrorless cameras to smartphone cameras, otherwise their phones would be in the league of professional DSLRs already.
Now watch the XZ2 Premium destroy every other smartphone camera in low light video recording and even in Auto low light (this phone can take the quickest low light shot that's actually usable).

Yes you have a point, however, the case here is, Sony has also mastered those things that others have just started having. For instance, the XZ2 has the best water resistance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mHjTHPgXY4
Their 960fps super slow motion feature works in the best quality (1080p) and actually had real details (Note 9 reduces the noise, thus taking away a lot of clarity, not to mention that lower resolution). In 720p, Sony is still more detailed due to the less aggressive noise reduction.
If we're to talk about real 960fps, Huawei doesn't belong here. End of story.

Their time schedule will always vary depending on the situations. Android Pie has been rolling out for the XZ Premium for a while now, so it's your region to be blamed for blocking the update to reach your phone. Nonetheless, aren't you still happy that your phone will get it earlier than most phones released of the same time as your phone will? If you think that it's too late for them now to release the update, imagine it with Samsung or Huawei, which are going to get it by the beginning of 2019, which is also the same time as the Android Pie going to be released on Sony's Xperia XA2 series. Yes, MID RANGE Sony phones!
Besides, who said they promised something? They claim that the update will release around that time, but not exactly that specified date. They may have delayed the update in order to stabilize the software and ensure that nothing's going to fail once it's released officially, which is a great choice IMO, and Sony's UI has never been known for having major problems lately.

Shanti Dope, 30 Nov 2018Exactly. Most people don't even know that Japanese manufact... moreThis "true legend", as you wrote it, abandon the headphone jack just because of the trend.
This "true legend" produce camera sensors for many brands, like Samsung, Huawei etc, but at the end SONY phones are far from competition in pictures and video on mobile phones.
At the end, is not important so much who invent the technology, but who implement it in the best way and purpose. Example: Multi touch was invented long before iPhone, but Steve Jobs was the man, who saw the purpose and made great implementation of it. And i'm not an Apple fan. I'm still using my XZP.
SONY lost their way of uniqueness. Now they are lost and don't know what to push and what to keep. They implement first 960fps video on a phone, but even after almost 2 years, they implementation of 960fps video and quality is worst, comparing to SAMSUNG and Huawei.
And they never keep their time schedule. My XZP must receive Pie after October 16, according to their schedule, but now is the last day of November and still nothing. If you can't do it, don't promise it!

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2018your comment is as irrelevant today as it is useless here. ... moreExactly. Most people don't even know that Japanese manufacturers already have many of these flagship features today way before those OEMs started having them.

As to why there are few innovations from Japan now, is mainly because of how toxic the consumers are. Their technology is so advanced that they don't even have to worry about making a new one every year as the current one will remain very compelling, but the majority only recognizes Apple and Samsung back then, and that's not to say that they are terrible by any means, but it's very clear that Sony has been ahead of many of their rivals back in the day and even today still to some extent.

They say that Sony fans are pathetic, but what people don't understand is that those Sony fans they're talking about are the people who have seen Sony pioneer many technological advancements in the industry and could appreciate the true innovator of this century of mobile devices.

I'm just afraid that Sony may soon feel tired enough because of these never-satisfied people, and may end up quitting the game despite their great futuristic plans that they're supposed to show in the world if not for the lack of appreciation.

Within a few years Sony Mobile will follow the path of PC division at this rate, love from diehard fans simply wouldn't be enough to continue running the smartphone whole business.

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2018Sony should just stick to making Playstations and other ele... moreThe decision to move to bezel less displays and multiple cameras was the decision of their former CEO, not the new one. We're still keeen to see what the new officer is planning for this company in the future.
If you're not watching lately, Sony Xperia phones have excellent battery endurance as compared to many others that are seemingly degrading as years go by.
"Capacity is one thing, utilization is another for consideration."
Huawei and Samsung can go f* themselves with their 4500mAh batteries optimized to work like 3500mAh batteries. Just look at that battery life of the Mate 20 Pro, is that the batterry life that one would expect from a 4200mAh battery?? EW!

Their aim to provide better action type of smartphone cameras is their main priority. I, a Sony fan, also wants to see more manual controls over the camera, but the point is that most people simply aren't that smart enough to adjust parameters to achieve a great shot, and Sony believes that it's not the consumers' task to do the necessary adjustments just to achieve great-looking results, and that's why they have seriously improved on Superior Auto jpeg processing.
This just says it all: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Rfykvyh-IVU&t=45s
The removal of the jack was also a stupid decision, but didn't you see that big cutout on the top on this rumored case? It's a slot for the headphone jack! I can't be wrong with that, as it'd be way too large just for a microphone.

I hope you don't misinterpret specs from the actual device.
I know a lot of brands that advertise their phones to have these and those, but actually fail to fulfill their promises.
One of them advertises to use Sapphire Glass on their camera lens, another promotes that they have the best speed in the world. The other one claims that their chipset beats the Apple A12 Bionic SoC in benchmarks.
Sony is on par with their pricing level because their products deliver the quality that people would expect for such costs. Why can't you damn people see that?!
The XZ3 has the absolute best display according to the consumers (f* DisplayMate! Who cares what these measurement sh*t means if people don't like what they're seeing?), battery life is better than most other phones, camera is better than almost everyone this year, the audio is very good for a 2018 flagship phone, the peformance is arguably also the best in the Android realm, the update system and support is no doubt better than almost everyone.
It's very hard to find a great all-rounder as the XZ3. The Note 9 is great in many ways, but it has several weak points still, and it's considerably worse than the XZ3 in those areas.
The fact that the Mate 20 Pro faces many build quality issues alone already makes it an inferior phone to the XZ3, because what good is a great phone if it doesn't work accordingly? Phones at this price point shouldn't even come with such hardware problems.
iPhones are purely overpriced, and while they do deliver in quality, they're very overrated and unless I'm willing to pay twice as much for a phone that does the same thing, I'm not interested.

Their Xperia lineup promises not to do the same mistake as their Vaio laptop lineup has had.
You're probably one of those who whine about Sony brand exiting the mobile race some few years ago, yet here they are and still making great smartphones that are very competitive in many aspects.
I suggest you watch this video to find out more: https://youtu.be/Vab3Iaw1w0A

I worry that the other OEMs have blinded you completely into the belief that better specs = better phone already, that you forgot that real world usage matters too.

[deleted post]Idk how you define a dead brand, but they're still making some very competitive smartphones that gets the interest of many people.
The fact that you've also bothered enough to leave a comment and reply here also proves that you're one of the curious people about Sony, and that's exactly what makes them a very special brand; people talk about them so much despite the fact that they're not even investing heavily on marketing for people to talk about.

Sony should just stick to making Playstations and other electronics appliances. It's mobile division management is as stubborn as Apple's to refuse to give in to customer needs and wants not until it's too late and everybody is on the bandwagon.

Bezel-less displays and multiple cameras only now? Why Sony, why? And when can we expect 4000mAh battery from your wimpy phones? Purporting to claim photography and video superiority from a phone that has stupidly low battery life from small batteries for so long just doesn't make any sense!

And why not give better manual camera controls in your Xperia phones when you are selling them as photography and videography oriented devices? And you have removed the headphone jack too when most of your Sony loyalist buyers still want to use their expensive wired Sony headphones!

And the pricing for crippled specs and limited features you offer is just ridiculous! Are you telling us it's because if R&D too? You were nowhere in the map released by PwC here:

You pretend to command premium prices when you have nothing better to offer compared to Samsung and Huawei flagship phone devices. Wake up Sony, get real! LISTEN!!! before your mobile division becomes as extinct as your Vaio laptop line!

The lens and such things would grow in every dimensions EXCEPT in thickness. It will only be thicker if you're going to put some true optical zoom with mechanically moving lens (not a good idea in this era). It would be slightly thicker because of embedded DRAM, but wouldn't be to a point of being too much. I'd say it would be slightly thicker than the 40MP sensor of the P20 Pro.

You do have a point on Sony not using 1" sensors, however, I believe that they would still step up their game because they simply cannot let their major competitors to use better hardware than they do. That, or they would have to abandon their RX series completely and have these smartphones to replace their duty, or maybe improve the RX series to level up to prevent the Xperia series from catching up and surpassing them.

Dual selfie would be XZ5's thing, since XZ4 would only re-introduce the 21:9 ratio, and they would keep the best to be exclusive to the proper flagship series next year, which is indeed the XZ5 series (XZ5 Premium with the world's first 4K HDR 21:9 OLED smartphone screen).

We can only imagine what would be the result if the Ultra High Sensitivity capabilities of the XZ2 Premium will be paired with Google's Night Sight or Huawei's Night Mode software tricks (assuming it only modifies the details, not the color accuracy).
