The punch hole screen camera is the way forward

Reality is, these OEM's are not implementing these designs for the every day consumer, rather they're placating the small percentage of 'picky-eaters' who immediately jump ship because the design isn't exactly as futuristic as they had expected. If you include just a tiny fingernail clipping of a bezel at the top (including earpiece and sensors) while having none on the bottom, people complain. If you include a punch hole, people will complain about a void where they aren't drifting their eyes towards at any given time. Add a secondary display on the back, these same vocal minorities will complain about not being able to find a case for it.
Like, people are more inclined to upgrade when it's actually worth upgrading from, not because it's the hot thing to do or because a corporation who can afford to gain new hardware every year tells them to do so. The picky few who complain about a symmetrical design are missing the forest for the trees when the screen-body ratio is already above average.

I have the 6t and this tear drop notch is actually decent. I think the random hole is a bit off putting. You're gaining a tiny bit more in STB ratio but it's still ugly. Literally a random dot on your screen like some dead pixels.

Sucks that we even have to deal with any type of notch or punch hole to begin with.I like the pop up camera from Vivo. Now THAT"S innovation.Who out there, and BE HONEST,likes a hole or notch in their movie or video or picture there the whole time they are viewing??Honestly,I myself NEVER use my selfie camera. So i have to choose from a selection of handsets with a camera IN THE DISPLAY??!!Ridiculous.Had the OP 6t and could not deal with the notch. It was totally pointless to have.Returned it after 10 days.

The punch hole isn't symmetrical....I'm starting to think that the teardrop is the 'current' best solution - its relatively small and in the middle - before the ultimate solution is discovered its the next best thing I think.

Every now and again, I see an article on this website, that honestly has no purpose whatsoever except to make sure the website doesn't feel dead for lack of update.
This one is definitely one of those posts.
The notch is ugly, gimmicky and pointless. As is the punch-hole camera. The best designed devices last year were the sliders like the Oppo Find X and Mi Mix 3, because the slider adds a tangible way to interact with the device, whilst also looking and feeling worthy of inclusion into such a personal device.
The reason for calling it pointless is simple: It adds NOTHING to the user experience, the additional screen real estate afforded because of wrapping the screen around the front sensors is completely unusable practically, precisely because of the notch. It is a self defeating concept, and one that adds no benefit bar the increased STB ratio as a marketing gimmick. Also Face ID is broken in sunlight.

[deleted post]dear writer of this article,
'the punch hole screen camera is the way forward'
your job at gsmarena is getting to the office early in the morning, usually before sunrise, to cover the latest news, leaks and rumors. you have been following design trends from their development stage all the way to the final products.but you don't know that essential phone was the first notch phone.... you said
one of the sadder solutions among smartphone manufacturers is the notch, introduced by apple and the iphone x back in 2017

Still don't see the point of punch holes. Area around them won't be useable anyways.

Punch-hole is not a way forward, it's just another type of notch. If the camera hole was invisible when screen was on, that would be a way to go. But this? This is the same sh!t we have since last year.

In my opinion, it is better if all experts somewhere design the shape of the phone's camera lens, from circle to rectangle. So, it will have the same shape with the front speaker; and it will be positioned in one line. If it is, we gonna have dual, triple or even more selfie camera.

There are more simple solutions, drop the selfie cam, not everybody needs it, face unlock too, drop it for a couple of years until the tech is ready!
And the led and earpiece could be placed in a small hole in the upper frame.
Maybe the future actually is the secondary screen.
There are various solutions, but the problems is the Chinese monkey firms will just copy Apple anyway, trying to emulate premium feel...

Garfield, 30 Dec 2018"the notch, introduced by Apple and the iPhone X back in 20... moreExactly. And the Essential Phone's notch isn't as hideous and large as the iPhone X's.
I love my Essential Phone. Truly underrated. I also love how much I got it for! Only $224 back on August 20th. The same halo gray model I have now goes for nearly $200 more on Amazon at $419.
August 27th when I received it was a great day. That's also the same date Shenmue III gets released in 2019.

The experience you gained from that is totally relevant in an unparalleled fashion to today's modern processors. You could pick up right where you left off in 1985 and design a snapdragon into an system today, and what's more, totally school me at at. As far as I'm concerned, I pale in comparison to you having only recently designed several Cortex A8 and A53 systems from scratch. I fold under the density of your wisdom and beg for mercy.

Isn't it worse than a notch? I bet it's gonna cut into the content as opposed to the notch. Imagine pressing play/pause on a video in the YouTube app.

[deleted post]Maybe it is. Though, that is also completely irrelevant here. The relevant thing is the basic maths. Small screen requires less power to produce per pixel.
