regs, 12 Jan 2019We can safely say that whole Xperia business has been axed.... moreThe devices are great. But yeah, if they kill Compacts then the existence of Sony Mobile becomes pointless.

As long as they keep the XZ4 flagship at a manageable width (>70mm), then it's fine. There's the Plus/Premium for the Goliaths among us.

We can safely say that whole Xperia business has been axed. It's dead. No sales at all, poor devices.

EskeRahn, 12 Jan 2019Indeed that is an optimistic view, I hope you are right. :)... moreThat would actually be really nice. In general, Sony hands down makes the best compact phones next to Apple

Sony all the way, I never liked compact phones they're prone to accidental touches.

Hardly surprising they're having to economise... The software on their mobiles for the last 4 - 5 years has been getting increasingly horrendous. I've had enough of being frustrated at their programming. I'll take my hard earned somewhere else.

I would call that a multitude

But I agree if we are talking from 2018 onwards, there are only a few, and most below 'mediocre'

Only Pixel 3 (small enough) and Galaxy S9 (if you call it small) that lives in 5" world. Others just entered phablet range. Guess I'm convinced to trust in Google.

Maybe not only side bezels, but even more elongated display aspect ratio, that could also match the "a lot more surface area for their content"
                                (a theoretic edge-to-edge variant of the XZ2C would be 5.9" 18.7:9)

There aren't. There are two mid-range devices between phone-size and phablet-size (XA2 and LG Q7 or something), there are two flagships (S9 and Pixel 3) and there are a few low-end devices with 2 GB RAM for which mediocre would be a compliment.

There is another kind of interaction and kind of device sony miss, gaming phone and psp like control buttons. There is a lot what can be done, however depends on ideas sony got, if it got any for future...

Until now Sonys Compact-line have been the only highly speced phones available outside Japan.
