Okay Sony can you give us any other reason to buy your devices? No? Okay bye.

Though we both can agree that it is sad if they stop high end phone-sized devices, that does not make a business case.... If they by their sales statistics can see that the models can not generate enough profit to sustain development of the next one, well then it is only natural if they stop.

I wish they wouldn't, but they are a commercial business...

But I'm very surprised if they can not sell enough, as they (until the Sharp Aquos R2 Compact) has had the market alone. So unless the device got some serious drawbacks i'm unaware of, it seems like poor salesmanship.

Well, that's ashamed, a lot :(. Sony has made great compacts devices for years since 2010 Xperia (X10) Mini / Mini Pro, then Xperia V, ZR, beloved-Z1 Compact, to the most recent addition, the XZ2 Compact, and they're the only company that really did make great, true compact devices for years with flagship specs (well, including iPhone 5S-SE).

Sure, they're not perfect all the time, including when Xperia X Compact was announced in 2016... Still, Xperia Compact has been both solid foundations of Xperia. My mom used the Z3 Compact for 3 years before the screen defected it and replaced it with the original XZ, and she was happy with it. (just stating my opinion here :P)

Why I didn't buy a Xperia phone again (after having two):
                1) completely forgotten by Sony and their updates
                2) stupid DRM stuff when you unlock the bootloader
                3) considerable bloatware which you can't disable
                4) camera is painfully horrible in its textures, specially grass

                Nokia all the way :-D

Sony can do whatever they want, they're never gonna be successful with phones.

Sony's niche in compact segment is now gone. They're are soon to be doomed. They were better off cutting their countless budget and mid range phones. And sticking to premium but because their cameras are rubbish in real world they couldn't.

even the compact line got too big over time. 5 inches is nowhere near compact.

the market needs more sub 5 inch smartphones

Nooooo! WHY! Give me a Xperia XZ4 Compact or I will...

vrvly, 12 Jan 2019Media content that gets now more popular than just texting ... moreThat might be, But unfortunately I still has not grown three arms, nor has my fingers doubled in length, or grown extra joints, so it would prevent me from using it while using a hand for something else....

SURE if (or rather when) we get a new UI, with a mode where the large area is used for display, and only part of it is used for interaction THEN the phablets would be nice. But that would require completely new UI guide-lines, and thus rewrite or at the least modifications on almost all existing apps.

I assume we ARE going to see UI guide-lines changes, or completely new interaction anyway, when rollable and foldable displays will come, but that is yet a few years out in the future.
Talking to the device is one workaround, but it is still not ready for primary interface - and I would shun it anyway to use among others.

EskeRahn, 12 Jan 2019Extremely sad news if true. With Sharp (only available in ... moreMedia content that gets now more popular than just texting makes phones grow, the same as it was with feature phones before. Can imagine even tablet in hand(foldable) won't be enough some years from now...
Add to that load of features phones got, not everything can get smaller, actually compact misses few features of the bigger sibling, it was like last sign of the end.

Kiyasuriin, 12 Jan 2019Nuuuuuu~ No more compacts!IF the new owners of Sharp are sharp, they will use the opportunity to not only release the "Aquos Zero" outside Japan as they already did, but also the "Aquos R2 compact", that would be alone on the market as a new compact with high specs.
Yes I know the double notch looks horrible, but would be tolerable to get a 64mm device with FHD and high end chipset....
Should I buy a device without a keyboard, this one would be on the top of my list.
