HTC hasn't given up on its smartphone business, plans a comeback

07 October 2019
It will focus on releasing high-end devices.

Htc was a great company. If prices are high, they will fall again. In Asia people just looking for cheap devices.Best strategy is to sell devices in Asia like Xiaomi and Realme for the same price, and put flagships on European market with some extra accessories.

Google took most of its phone workers and gave them some money for a lifeline. What exactly can they do now they could not do before. If you have not been paying attention, the smartphone market is a commodity these days, meaning only folks with deep pockets can afford to spend a boatload of money to differentiate.

Even Samsung with their deep pockets is having a hard time competing and that's simply because no one outside of Apple has its own eco-system. So again, what exactly can HTC do that the other 100's of Android OEM's can't? HTC can't beat them on hardware, can't beat them on software, can't beat them on price. So what does HTC have left to compete on? Those are the only 3 things they can do something about and I don't see how they can pull it off.

better battery, better screen, much better camera. the timing was bad to introduce all glass phones and that beautiful but fragile back that all others now copy. Removing the jack 3.5 was a bad decision on that time also. I didn't mind since they provided the dongle, but guess that pissed some loyal clients. The only thing i miss from my htc 10 is the form factor. without bezels would be a killer phone with current specs.

Now at this stage HTC is comparable to Micromax of India.. To make a comeback it will require huge investment in RD and infrastructure.

They said the same when they released the first version of HTC One a few years back, that they were to scale down all these models and concentrate on a select few High-end models.

That statement ended up to become a proper lie.

HTC should remind themselves what made HTC 10 a great device and improve upon that. Because the U series was not a move in good direction.

OZO audio is the only good thing in video recording this phone has by standard. Photos are good only in good lighting and the "Pro" mode is just laughable.
As a flagship it's decent, but any other Xiaomi or OnePlus flagship beats it by miles.
And don't even get me started about official support. It's enough to say that flagships are not HMDs priority and that's how they're treated.
So no, Nokia 8 is not a success. It's not a bad phone, but definitely not a success.

Whackcar, 07 Oct 2019That's the worst advice ever. Outside of a handful of fans,... moreNokia 8 is a Grade A success to me. Ozo Microphones, Stellar monospeaker that is so loud that it can fill a small room with high grade sounds for everyone to hear, polished multiple times per layer for every gloss colored Nokia 8 out there, proving Apple wrong with Series 6000 body not bending and a few more.

Sure the monochrome Instagram trend died so fast in 2017 and the camera sucked but hey, it outweighed the other flagship worthy features I mentioned. 1.4k Likes for the entirety of 2017 - 2018 and more than 14 million views in GSMArena. Tell me if that's a flop? No.

Fascinating. I'll wait until then to upgrade my old htc phone to the 2020 flagship.

There you have it. That CEO finally gets it (was he appointed recently?). Except if you have a captive market, R&D and innovation is your only way to profit. Let this be a lesson to companies that want to cut corners on R&D.

Outside of a handful of fans, nobody is interested in HMD phones. Their flagships are total flops (Nokia 8, Sirocco, 9, all flops). Only their midrangers and budget models sell, and even they're losing appeal because brands like Xiaomi & Realme offer better.

HMD is simply not a company to look up to.
