Samsung developing a massive 1" 150MP sensor, Xiaomi phone with it coming in Q4

17 March 2020
Finally, a sensor larger than that inside the Nokia 808 PureView. Besides Xiaomi, Oppo and vivo are also interested in the sensor.

Aside from that, long range zooms are becoming the new trend as well, so a high resolution sensor would be beneficial to hybrid optical zooming. Even if the sensor is not natively as sharp as a single bayer high resolution sensor, it would still be better than purely upscaling a 12MP image.

This sensor is not going to under perform. It will do it's just within it's capabilities well. Which unfortunately is underwhelming compared to the idea of the resolution.

Use the multiple sample points to get a better chance at calculating how much light the sensor actually receives instead of just taking an average that will include one or more really bad sub-pixels.

Anonymous, 17 Mar 2020Nokia 808 does not do binning. It does downsampling. This is my question. Why manufacture goes for Binning instead of downsampling?
Is Nokia had the patent for this technique? Or is it costly to manufacture? Or is it requiring huge sensor so manufacturers are not willing to make a fat phone?

              Symbian is the culprit.
Nokia had gone all out with Windows Phone and already sent memo about "Symbian Burning Paltform" while in fact it's doing fine really. It's Elop as everyone knew the fact.
Android was on the rise, iPhone is coming with 4s.

Although it has a goddess camera, 808 just cant compete because simply people wanted something new and better. And that time, Symbian was really behind Android in app market.

HeWhoHates, 17 Mar 2020Someone doesn't understand how pixel binning tech works...Pixel binning is TECHNICALLY not ACTUALLY making a larger pixel size.

808 is still the one with HUGE sensor with HUGE pixel size NATIVELY.

Maybe this technique allows a slimmer phone and easy to manufacture, but still needs improvements time to time.

                    Just an FYI for everyone
                    1" sensor isn't 1" diagonally.
1" sensor is the film equivalent, so it's around around 1.5 cm diagonally not 2.5cm.

In most cases it means sharper image, better colors, better hdr, better zoom, better 8K.
Though huawei could resolve patterns better on 40mp sensor than samsung on 108mp one, mp is not everything. It however becomes important if the difference is 12mp or 150mp, Not just for 8K, but even stills are heaven&hell. B&W still in full res could cover your room.

Anonymous, 17 Mar 2020He meant less detail compared to 48MP regular Bayer sensor. When Sony released their original data sheet for the IMX586, they compared the sensor with a regular 12MP and showed that its details were crisper in comparison. The comparison was never with a 48MP sensor. After layering the sensor with Quad Pixels it's not even possible to have actual 48MP photos from the sensor. It merely debaters and then upressed, and because the process is so processor intensive (and also has lousy algorithms for the same), it loses out on the HDR photo advantage that regular 12MP would have.

                            https://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201807/18-060E/

I guess, even with the the promised 200MP processing power of the Snapdragon865, smartphone processors may still struggle with very high MP image sensors (especially with HDR). Also, both the CFA decoding algorithms and other things in the pipeline still need a lot of fine tuning to get things completely right. Another issue is with image sensors. As the megapixel count goes up, the processing (readout) speed per frame of the entire sensor, goes down. While it may be easy to have full resolution readout at upto 20MP at 60fps or even 120fps, especially with DRAM. With anything above that, it becomes increasingly difficult to have multi-frame HDR. Also, combining multi-pixel exposure HDR with multi-frame HDR become a much greater task than regular HDR, and there are some serious pipeline issues, some of which don't seem to have been overcome yet, apparently. Also, non-reflective lens coating and high resolving lenses seem increasingly important, to be able to venture on a path of better quality images from high resolution sensors.

The CFA is the single biggest hindrance and it needs a lot of smart algorithms to overcome its handicap. The Bayer Pattern is both a blessing and a huge hindrance.

Also I dont like nona bayer structure. It shouldnt be marketed as 150MP(144mp) as it clearly captures around 16MP of color information and 144MP of light information. So in full resolution mode it is something between 16 and 144MP resolution.

I hope to God that Vivo will be using this with their NEX 4 or 5 alongside the Gimbal module that was revealed in Apex 2020. I hope Samsung improved their Nona-Bayer technology as the S20 Ultra didn't take better photos than Xiaomi's 108MP cameras (Bright HMX & Quad-Bayer)
