Samsung developing a massive 1" 150MP sensor, Xiaomi phone with it coming in Q4

17 March 2020
Finally, a sensor larger than that inside the Nokia 808 PureView. Besides Xiaomi, Oppo and vivo are also interested in the sensor.

Davy Jones, 17 Mar 2020I don't understand why there is even a need for quad Bayer... moreMe too don’t understand that, instead of this they can easily make an 1 inches camera sensor with 16mp. So, they can also get same pixel size.

I hope next time Samsung will make an APS-C camera sensor for smartphones .

            It does downsampling.

YUKI93, 17 Mar 2020Exactly, so true with you. Native resolution with big nativ... moreOnly at Full Res. For a 12MP sensors the 48MP Quad Bayer sensors resolved a lot more detail.

it's great that they are using bigger sensors but really no need to be 150mp cause then again we would have small pixels and no use plus really high size of the image files

If Samsung just creates a 24MP 1inch sensor with DRAM, and atleast 1 stop faster lens (f/2 instead of f/2.8 like on the CM1), it will have a winner. It could easily have superb HDR, way better and faster processing (the CM1 had the Snapdragon 801 processor which was a relic, and 2Gb RAM). Faster processing, DRAM, and the Snapdragon 865 or the 875 or whatever the latest SoC would be, should create a Photography monster.

150 MP and still can't resolve much details in a picture. Shame. That's the future. Just marketing ploy to get some leverage of being the first. The only phone that got pixel binning right was the Nokia 808 Pureview.

It still can eat iPhones and Pixels for breakfast despite its age. The only thing I don't like about the CM1 is the lack of OIS and Xenon flash.

Panasonic Lumix CM1 says hi to you. I definitely want to see a modern day successor to that with OIS and Xenon flash. For me, that Panasonic is the only worthy rival to the Nokia Lumia 1020 and also the Nokia 808 PureView. Those three phones are still the holy trinity of mobile photography to this day.

Native resolution with big native micron pixel and oversampling will always beat Quad Bayer or Nona Bayer pixel binning. Heck, even Juha Alakarhu himself said that Quad Bayer is an advantage in low light but disadvantage in detail. Source: https://twitter.com/jalakarhu/status/1021695857786331136

1" sensor but with Nona Bayer pixel binning? I don't think Sony RX100 will be afraid of this. Heck, even the 2014 Panasonic Lumix CM1 wouldn't be much of a threat.

Samsung is still playing the "we did it first" game. But still catching up with Sony's sensor no matter what they do.

I wonder if some manufacturer manages to fit IMX 532 / IMX 542 in a smartphone before Q4 2020. Both of them are 16.19 MP sensors with size 1.1"(16.8 mm) and pixel size 2.74 μm. Sammy and their marketing unit will definitely get triggered!
