Flashback: the Nokia N95 was a high point for Symbian but also the beginning of the end

12 April 2020
This phone seemed to have everything but it came out only months before the iPhone, which changed the mobile world forever.

Great device! Remember all good times spent with it, sadly i lost all video and photo content which were transferred to the hdd.
I had it for 4 years, then finally jumped on android.
I miss Reset Generation game which I played a lot, it was a more social game in those times than we have thousands now after so much technology progress. Still waiting it to be reborn on android, i heard there are some licensing issues... Fingers crossed 🤞

I still use this phone for listening music.

Nokia c6 got me crazy then.. would always sit to think of this phone I just saw on the website. But it was to expensive then so had to opt for Nokia c1.. funny right?.

Those were some great days. Loved the Nokia N95-1 in Sand colour.
The best variant of N95 was the N95-3 which was sold in the USA, it had the large battery of the N95-8GB along with the larger 128mb RAM, while retaining the MicroSD slot and higher PPI 2.6inch screen.

The top dog will always be the Nokia E90 though, that was N95 hardware in the form of a Communicator, less the 5MP camera for a 3MP one though.

Let’s not forget the incredible N82 with N95 hardware, candy bar shape and axe one flash to complement that incredible 5MP Carl Zeiss camera.

Nokia were on a role between 2006-2008, the Nokia N93, N93i, N95, N95-8GB, N82 and E90 were peak Nokia in all available smartphone designs at the time. Glad to have owned some of them and played with some of them, they really pushed boundaries.

Symbian was a great platform but was never given all the resources it required, not enough emphasis was put on the importance of fully fledged and well optimized software and software market, it was a Wild West and some software makers charged crazy prices for not much gain, you really had to pay to play and get burnt by a few, this also spurred on a huge black market for cracked software.

At the time I went for the Sony Ericsson P1i .. good phone and still have it (and it works) .. but the touch was very old near the Apple.

Very good article, I remember the N95 made a huge fuss back then and it was really different. I still think Symbian was great, i liked the E71 and the E6 better- great phones.

Yes, i still have the 8850 as part of my collection. It had the problem of the nails against the keyboard but after find as replacement is there for posterity line new with its beautiful titanium and a beast in its time. A true genuine one.

The cheap crap reproductions from HMD are an insult to the original ones. Today that the cameras are a must, they even can't program a proper image software processing. Partner with Light was the confirmation of their incompetence and incapacity. Only overpriced and crippled hardware is what you can buy from them under the Nokia brand...

A legend of its time. Proud to the owner of Nokia 808 PureView, the greatest of Symbian phone ever. Really loved Nokia N95 design at one point.

Any idea when the real nokia can restart making phones? I think it should be time the microsoft/hmd license expires. Would be great if nokia returns and with a refined symbian or meego. Dont want android anymore and never liked ios or windows. Those were great days without all the google/microsoft spyware. Finland has decent privacy laws and I trust them to produce spyware free phones.

The 8GB model is my all-time favourite phone. A non-addictive (early) smartphone, remember those days? My uncle had the 8GB model, my dad had the original which he preferred. Still remember having a small debate on which one was better between me versus my bro and dad. I don't know how to describe what I felt when I saw this article, brain paused in shock or something like that. The N95's are what introduced my interest into smartphones. My dad got his on 26 June 2008, time flies. Still have to take a few seconds to appreciate the beauty of the N95 8GB, it's irresistable in a way.
