And this chip is more intended for gesture than for biometric anyway even though they use it for that too (it doesn't really help much though).
They simply did the stupid shortcut of thinking, "one biometric or another" without thinking that two of them would offer choice for two type of customers or even code a dual biometric unlock which would be exponentially more secure.
So, the reason is simple, the smartphone industry seem to have chosen to make the most amount of poor decisions possible since 2017/2018.

travstr, 07 Jul 2020not really though. you definitely haven't used a Samsu... moreAll tech sites say it is worse than all other phones that use optical.
Another excuse to defend samsung.
Has billions of budget to make phones, still they are not any better than other flagships.
What a failure.
Camera has worse focus than M series and does not perform better than s20 despite sensor is 2x the size.
Worse battery at 120Hz compared to other 120Hz that use QHD.
Same wrong colours on screen since s7 (issues to properly display red, white, green, gray amd black) , warm tones.
No wonder why most reviews gave 8,0 or less to S20 Ultra.

Appearance wise it could pass as a budget phone.

This has to be a 4a XL. Otherwise the idea of the 4a design language plus a SoC bump and telephoto camera doubling the price is just ridiculous. I don't think bringing back the fingerprint sensor in place of a mostly unwanted face biometric is that surprising, but I find it unlikely. They would be more likely to go the route of the Huawei P40 to support both. The idea of a $700 phone with a rear mounted fingeprint sensor instead of a UD sensor also seems unlikely.

Clean and timeless industrial design. But nowadays most people seem to like fancy childish design from kindergarten... Hopefully it will have a bigger camera sensor this time. And, of course, a bigger battery. SoC is just right - nobody really needs those fast processors in a smartphone. If I really want to play 3-D-games on the go there are some gaming phones out there.

travstr, 07 Jul 2020not really though. you definitely haven't used a Samsu... moreExactly !
Also, like an idiot I forgot to put the link to the comment I was talking about...
https://www.gsmarena.com/newscomm-44006.php#2088310
There are tons of things making the initial 3D Sonic performing not that optimally, software is basically all of them, but power management of the phone and user way to use it too, but since the updates, I hear everyone saying it work really well.
Most peoples don't realize how complex it is to gather data from ultrasound in real time...
So of course the software couldn't work well first time, optical underdisplay FPS had the same beginning, except that here, sadly, Samsung signed an exclusivity use contract for the 3D Sonic, and the situation with the 3D Sonic Max is complexe where Samsung also wanted exclusivity.
Even news media say the same stupid things, just today I saw an article made today comparing the OnePlus 8 Pro to the Galaxy S20+, and the ignorant guy who wrote literally wrote :
"The optical sensor, supplied by Goodix, is simply faster and much more reliable than the Galaxy S20+’s Qualcomm-sourced ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor (3D Sonic Sensor). Samsung is the only vendor using these ultrasonic sensors, and it doesn’t make much sense. When it works, the ultrasonic sensor is only slightly slower than the optical sensor, but reliability continues to remain a significant issue. The cons of the sensor outweigh the pros."
While putting a link to the 3D Sonic Max announcement despite this sensor being totally not in the S20...
He wrote "these * sensors" as if there was multiple models, despite all 3 S10, S20 and Note10 having the same 3D Sonic, he obviously never tested it post updates and don't even know what he talk about.
That's exactly the same kind of false debunked myths that almost killed the pop up, who despite proving his worth still have to face so many ignorants spreading false informations...
As you said, that's what cause many great tech to either disappear, never appear in the first place of have a limited success, and this is what happened to the pop up and is happening to ultrasonic FPS (Samsung exclusivity contract didn't help, as even if Qualcomm refused it, many other brand wouldn't have risked to start building a phone with a tech that may become unavailable...) and meanwhile overspread techs are almost praised by their defenders who almost defend said feature as if their life depended on it while casually making rare tech rarer...
This afternoon I saw an article where various 2020 gaming mouses were tested, the first to appear was the Lexip NP93 Alpha, they proceed to complain and mark as a "con" that the stick on this mouse couldn't be removed, C'mon guy, the mouse literally is made around that, if you don't like it buy something else...

Anonymous, 07 Jul 2020Are you aware that the ultrassonic in-screen is the worst o... morenot really though. you definitely haven't used a Samsung device with the ultrasonic fingerprint, so I'd suggest you be quiet.
I had a Mate 20 Pro and the optical sensor was pretty alright, but the brightness needed to scan was off-putting and you usually needed a lot of pressure to actually work.
now I have a note 10+ and I much prefer it. it was okay on launch but now with updates it's super quick, really accurate and ultimately way more secure than optical sensors.
you are the classic example of don't knock it until you try it, and people like you are why certain technologies don't take off as quickly as they could and should. shame.

Anonymous, 07 Jul 2020Are you aware that the ultrassonic in-screen is the worst o... moreAre you aware that you don't know what you talk about ?
And yes I know they are optical.
I literally wrote a big post 3h ago that explain how and why the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner Samsung used is considered so bad, spoiler alert :
It have NOTHING to do with ultrasonic FPS tech, it is about proper implementation.
The new 3D Sonic Max that is yet to be put in a smartphone (MAYBE on the Note20, and some rumors have it being possibly put in the iPhone 12) is way better, totally upgraded, and with a proper implementation will blow every fingerprint out of the blue.
Making the shortcut "First and only ultrasonic fingerprint scanner only available on 3 phone of the same brand being bad" = "Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner tech is bad"...
This is literally what happened to the pop up camera and why despite being actually awesome and suffering NONE of the weakness constantly say they have, have a low popularity, not because it is bad, but because myth about it being bad is so widespread that it give that impression.
