Fulljack, 01 Aug 2020I know that SoftBank sold Arm to raise money for their $100... moreThat's just the excuse. In reality, they just threw cash everywhere in a purely speculative bid. That didn't work. Those issues arose before the pandemic. Now they just want to get whatever they can from those failures

By moving all these tech edge in the hands of USA is very dangerous. Tomorrow Samsung can be banned. Or Asus. Or anyone who is considered a threat to USA politics, even inside their own country.
This company should stay away from any company from China and USA! Europe is very good. Switzerland is the best.

They've been pushing for their properties to make more money somehow, including ARM. So far ARM resisted but that will happen, regardless of whoever owns them (buying ARM for 32G$ was dumb and ruined it)

under tech companies, this will change because every company were using Arm solution directly, not building from the ground up from the ISA that is available, because that'll be too much effort.

if any, this will turn to be a monopoly under them.

Surely if they want to license tech from Qualcomm, they would make sure that NVIDIA plays nice in return (likewise Samsung has advantageous deals with Qualcomm regarding tech and patents).

AND I don't see them making a phone. Again, it's hard to crack the market even if you find your niche, and NVIDIA doesn't have disposable income to gamble on a DoA phone.

Aaaanyway, regulatory bodies would object to the transaction normally, as it would be funded via massive debt. The proposed HP/Xerox wouldn't have worked for the same reason, and would have sunked both. So if NVIDIA went ahead, they could probably go bankrupt.

So don't worry. This wouldn't work. And ARM is doomed anyway due to SoftBank speculation.

I see what you're fearing though, but you should also know that thanks to SoftBank, ARM was going to get worse anyway. Prices will rise, conditions will be stricter. I'd rather if it's a tech company that buys them instead of yet another investment fund (YAIF) because YAIF only wants money and will gladly ruin the value of ARM for immediate cash. At least tech company will know what they're doing, and any shady business is likely to be faced with antitrust litigation due to obvious conflicts of interest (harder to do against YAIF)

If you are some tech savvy who wants to see all types of variants and brands, bad luck. ARM Mali GPUs aren't competing with NVIDIA GPUs. The former are ultra low power (yet scalable), the latter much more powerful and power-hungry. NVIDIA would do well to keep those fully separated efforts or Qualcomm will become dominant (and let's not forget those AMD-based GPUs Samsung will allegedly use next year). Battery life is still hyper important and thus needs bespoke products. Mobile challenges are radically different from what NVIDIA is working on.

They failed at phones because of modems. Getting NVIDIA Tegras + modems + licenses (usually from Qualcomm) was getting more expensive than just going for Qualcomm. I might be wrong there though.
