I bet this "midrange" phone will be very very good and above everything that the average user needs.
It will for sure be more capable than any iphone with 5 year old specs that many call flagship.

ae86, 09 Mar 2021Sony has to reconstruct it's business model. PS doesn&... moreDon't you think that might have something to do with the fact the PS4 was end of life and most people already had one?
Look at Sony's various businesses, they are doing just fine.

Rdmkr, 09 Mar 2021To anyone who is interested in actual compact devices with ... moreNot a bad idea but still some poor design choices like a pop up camera (just have bezels), can't see a headphone jack or lanyard eyelet, and where's the fingerprint sensor (please tell me it's not in the screen)?
Has as many compromises as most phones, all I (a lot of people) want is a Z5C with upgraded specs.

potato4k, 09 Mar 2021Make sense for Japan only releases. At least some of them w... moresomehow ye... some "sony fans" are just talk and alibis... told them why they left the philippines but still can be bought online (though without warranty)... usually i read "come back here in philippines" or "come back here in india"... a company on its right mind does not sell products in a country with too few demands, that is costly...
just hoping i can still get an xperia after 3-5 years... my ideal upgrade cycle... though all my 6 xperias are still working... ye, from miro to 1ii...

Anonymous, 09 Mar 2021Well iphone 12 mini cost 800 euro and the just iphone 12 is... moreI am so sad it won't go global. I really hope Sony changes it's mind.
All I want is a dual sim smartphone phone with less than 145mm... I don't care about brand, operative system, price or chip. There's just nothing out there.

Daany, 09 Mar 2021*tears in eyes* How does Sony manage to keep their designs ... moreThey have huge culture of simple shape product design that's been with them for decades. Apple poached all of their Vaio designers over the time. Their Walkman line is unbelievably simple yet so good looking when you have it in your hand. Xperias too. It takes great effort to make something so simple yet so fluid and fulfilling.

ae86, 09 Mar 2021Sony has to reconstruct it's business model. PS doesn&... moreIt's not because they're doing something wrong. Different people simply have different preferences in gaming. Maybe people just enjoyed playing Nintendo games more than PlayStation games, but it doesn't necessarily mean that Sony's strategies are not good, otherwise they wouldn't even be selling better outside of their hometown. Besides, you should also consider the type of gaming machines of those two, as they are totally different in that aspect. Switch is a portable gaming console, while PlayStation is a home entertainment console, and people in Japan are most likely very busy and always outside, so a PlayStation that they can only play at home is no go, whereas most citizens in European countries are living mostly inside their homes, so a PlayStation or PC is their way to go.
In fact, this alone shouldn't even be enough to say that they're not doing anything good. Changing their strategies now will more likely do more harm than good to them. Their falling sales are mostly caused by the pandemic, and every company is affected by these, so to exclusively say this to Sony is a very biased outlook.

Rdmkr, 09 Mar 2021When did 5.5" become our standard for "compactnes... more5.5" is screen size, not PHONE size. At least check the overall dimensions of the phone first before commenting ridiculously stupid questions.
5.5" phones today is NOT the same exact size as the 5.5" phones before the bezel-less trend era.

*tears in eyes* How does Sony manage to keep their designs straight, bland and scanty for years but still ends up being most beautiful and desirable? I don't know, I have no clue but (in tears and shaky voice) give me two of that please. You can have all my money.

Anonymous, 09 Mar 2021Well iphone 12 mini cost 800 euro and the just iphone 12 is... moreI agree, Apple have always used battery capacities which are just barely adequate!
Sony's Compact series of phones are thicker and have better battery capacities / life than the iPhone mini.
I am forever hopeful all manufactures will sell a phone to fill the "Compact niche" instead of just trying to fill every price point with 6 or more inch screens!
The Compact phone market is relatively small, but should not be ignored. It's a pity manufactures do not recognise this.
I also think manufactures think folding phones will fill the demand for small form factor phones, however they forget not everyone is willing to pay $1000 plus for any phone let alone a compact or folding one!

To anyone who is interested in actual compact devices with a sensible aspect ratio (or needs convincing that this is the way to go), look up OneDevice.

potato4k, 09 Mar 2021Make sense for Japan only releases. At least some of them w... moreBrand loyalty is nothing but a lie only an employee would pass around because they're afraid they might lose their job if sales are down.
I'm more loyal to the SD card slot and the 3.5mm jack than to any brand out there.
After 6 years of INTENSIVE daily use and 3 years of resting in a drawer, my Sony Z is still working without any problems. But for the last 3 years I switched to Samsung because Sony ditched the 3.5mm jack. Now that Samsung ditched both the 3.5mm jack and now the SD card slot, I'm going back to Sony.
I'm loyal to features that I want and like, not to brands!
So, unless you OWN that brand, or you at least work for them, being loyal is just dumb af!
All I can say is that the Sony phone is the clear champion. I've dropped it so many times, even on purpose once or twice, without any case on and except for some minor scratches, it's still intact. My S8+ on the other hand, with original wallet case on, is a total looser. I've dropped it only once from from my pocket while sitting on a chair at home and the display broke.
Updates on Sony were excellent, on Samsung they suck (both phones carrier free unlocked).
As for china brands, I wouldn't use one even if they payed me. Boycott all the way!
