Weekly poll: Sony Xperia Mark III tries something different, but is it worth the price of admission?

18 April 2021
Looking at these three you get the feeling that Sony is ignoring market trends and is content to do its own thing - would you be part of it?

notafanboy, 19 Apr 2021That's your opinion and I couldn't care less abou... moreI own the phone that's got the same cameras as DxOMark's no.2 (The Huawei P40 Pro+), it produces stunning photos from all 4 back lenses and the front one - I'm not paid by Huawei but I can see it with my own eyes.
People who spout nonsense about Dxomark are generally fans annoyed because their favourite phone (which they've probably bought already) gets a poor mark.
Their reviews generally agree with everybody else's, are detailed and give a good general indication of camera quality in the mode nearly everybody uses - Auto.
Sony's Auto mode is truly dreadful because they've traded image quality for auto focus speed and even that doesn't always work well. But you'll always get attacked on a Sony article if you don't agree with them, they're almost as rabid as iPhone fans.

wongwatt, 19 Apr 2021And the non-pro app is awful I agree. But the Pro apps are... moreWell, sensors are 4/3 ratio, so on a 21/9 screen, without even wanting to look cool, you are left with a ton of black space. Unless you wish it automatically crop to produce awful 21/9 -16/9 photos? That's really too situational to even be a mode I would say. Especially when it's 2 click away in post prod.
About the portrait, well, nothing prevent from turning the phone. Really, pro mode with all setting in automatic is just like your regular camera, point and click.
Also, it's perfectly fine if it doesn't appeal to some or even most people. They are too expensive for most anyway.

How am I supposed to trust a phone that loses GPS just when I need it and then rejects all calls in and out?
          Utter rubbish.

Also the app that Sony puts on the Home Screen and is launched from the Lock Screen button is the default one - why would anybody assume the Pro apps are the ones that they should be using?

sohail shafayat, 18 Apr 2021I know that high mp don't equate to better images, but... moreIndeed, the photos that come out of my P40 Pro+ are always great in all situations - without having to fiddle around in a "Pro" app.

But the Pro apps are pretty terrible too, the photo one has an interface that only works in landscape and obscures nearly half of the display trying to look cool. The video one has no clear way off selecting save to SD card so you don't know where it's going to. And you really shouldn't have to use two overcomplicated apps to to take basic photo and video on a PHONE.
Despite what Sony thinks their phones are just that, not professional cameras. I've no issues with the attached display support, that's brilliant, but their phones also need to do simple point and shoot well.

Johnny2, 18 Apr 2021Oh so you mean stock Android is buggy? Go buy an iPhoneNo, I mean Sony's Android is buggy.
I don't get those issues on other phones.
Sony does not use stock Android.
The GPS issue has been a reoccurring theme throughout Sony's phone history - it's them not Google.

Its much too embarassing to patronize someone over a site that is supposedly solely concentrated around camera testing, its all they supposedly do, yet pales significantly in camera testing content in comparisson with overal mobile tech rev sites like Arena here.
It should by logic be the other way around, but it is plainly not. Heck, even some pop ytubers do a much more comprehensive camera testing than that promo site.

Even one of staff admitted it once in their forum. They obtain them a year later, which way is unimportant.
Then observe the way those not sent devices are "reviewed", and draw some conclusions on how they operate.
Another thing to state is PhotoPro has its Auto mode. They didnt even look into PhotoPro app.

Interesting devices, I love their sizes, 6.5 to 6.0, seriously Sony is pulling at me, but the prices, the prices are painful, plus like Moto, are there any Sony handsets in Africa?

                                    - no 3d Face unlock once again,
                                    - no in-screen fingerprint sensor,
                                    - same old main camera sensor as last year,
                                    - pretty sure it will be the same crappy 8MP selfie camera,
                                    - not good enough for price battery capacity,
                                    - suspect that the screen brightness will be behind the competition again,
                                    - no proper computational photography (must be in default Camera app at least),
                                    - abysmal updates history (my mate's Xperia 5 is still on Android 10 and last year security patch. WTF Sony! Is Xperia 5 that old???)

Lets them continue to make TVs, real DSLR or Mirrorless cameras, audio equipment etc. Honestly, Sony never really were good with phones. Even in their prime time, as you said, Nokia was better anyway :). I'm telling it as an owner of Sony-Ericsson T100 and W800. Recently used to had Xperia 1, 5 and 5 II. Those last three were rather pieces of embarrassment, sorry.
