YUKI93, 16 Apr 2021What do you mean by "useless" IP67/68? Thanks to ... moreYou are mixing up water resistance and IP rating, IP rating isn't what make the phone water resistant, it is just a certification that actually is pretty bad at really guaranteeing that the phone will actually survive liquids, there are more than enough cases of IP rated phones killed by water to prove this.
A phone can be build actually waterproof (yes, proof, not just "resistant") without any kind of IP certification.
IP certification only cost money and prevent nice techs to be implemented.
Also I've never been in a situation where IP67/68 rating would have been useful to me.
IPx4/x5/x6 on the other hand is quite practical as rain is something we really have to deal with.
IP67/68 phones are NOT designed to be put underwater, that was the main point of the Apple waterproof lawsuit, and some say Apple is probably the one who implement the best water resistance, yet it isn't enough.
The day we will have phones with ATM rating, THEN it will have senses, and it will still only be worth the risk if the brand do cover water damage, which none do.

Meanwhile, IP rating only prove that a certain number of phones (without way for us to know if it has been legit or not BTW) has resisted a series of test in lab conditions, on brand-new phones and only once, it doesn't take into account defective units nor wear over time or from certain things like chlorine or salt.

That's why, if you were to take any IP67/68 rated smartphone and compare it with any non IP rated phone with a pop up or flip up that was sold around similar units, you'd find that significantly more of the IP rated phone died because of liquid, because people think IP rating = waterproof, while it is clearly not, and those with phones like the Zenfone 7 are much more careful, resulting in IP rating actually having a negative impact other than just killing features.

Don't get me wrong, I am not against building phones that are water resistant, I even imagined at least 2 pop up and one slider design that is water resistant, but IP rating itself isn't our friend, it was never meant for devices like Smartphones nor for putting the object underwater, it is a certification that, the device CAN survive in the worst case scenario, like a surveillance camera that get caught under a heavy rain, or an outdoor electric outlet that has to deal with a flood.
So indeed IP rating is useless because of that.
I'd take anyday a phone where the brand cover liquid damages over one that is IP67/68 rated for sure.

robsi, 16 Apr 2021if you can't understand yourself how nice and comforta... moreNot really. I've never had it. It's pretty easy to understand what it is and you'd have to be brainless not to understand. However with fast charging now with most phones charging between 30 and 65w now and huge batteries, a minimum of 4500mah and easily available cheap charging banks as well, there's no need for it. Most wireless charging is under 20w speed. Not ideal really. Most phones the way people usually use their phones last over a day sometimes nearly two days on a charge. Why would anyone pay a premium for this facility? It may have been useful on 3000-3500mah batteries.

Peter UK, 16 Apr 2021This!! 870 is enough, 888 might cause troubleJust a theory... is it possible that either google and/or phone makers just keep adding stuff to the graphical user interface to slow phones down and boost sales? Like on PC, other than games, what really pushes the hardware to the point people constantly look for the next upgrade? (other than higher refresh rate (took to long to get done) or the camera, everyone has become pros at photography and 4k movies).

My pixel 4a is considered a joke by experts commentators/forum gurus. If i were to disable some of that via accessibility, the performance goes up like crazy. Like old DOS games on new PCs that run at a comically high speed.

A mini / compact will be much more appealing to buyers if it comes in a premium midrange package rather than full fledged flagship. Spec geeks will always go for the big screens.

The dimensions of the Asus Zenfone 8 Mini are rumored to be 165.1 mm x 77.3 mm x 9.6 mm; and it might weigh approximately 230 grams. It is expected that this upcoming phone will come with a 6.67 inches (16.94 cm) display that will have a resolution of 1080 x 2400 Pixels.

WTF? How is this mini? It's even larger than Xperia 1 III ffs!!!

Anonymous, 16 Apr 2021Sad to say, but this phone will not be hitting record sale ... moreI think the 16GB ram would come with 512GB storage, but there's definitely gonna be lower variants like 8 or 12GB with 128/256GB storage. I doubt they'll sell only one variant of the mini. The flip and Pro too will have some high end specs. My only worry is not introducing a card slot. I really can't live without a card slot. I can trade off a headphone jack, but card slot is a must.

Why, for the love of anything, would you EVER want a "mini" gamer phone, Asus?

Anonymous, 16 Apr 2021Sad to say, but this phone will not be hitting record sale ... more16 Gb is the top variant, it actually starts at 8 Gb. I won't mind a 860 or 780, but 870 is a big no due to no integrated modem. External modem will only waste the limited space inside the phone.

YUKI93, 16 Apr 2021What do you mean by "useless" IP67/68? Thanks to ... moreIP rating is always appreciated, atleast some kind of splash resistance. But not possible with moving parts, most people love Zenfone for its flipcam, so it's a reasonable tradeoff. If they replace the flipcam with punch holes, it'll be no different from other brands. You could buy a OnePlus for that.
The only useless feature is wireless charging. It's only second to curved displays. You're basically sticking it on a surface instead of sticking in the port. Anyone with a functional brain knows how to plug a charger and can do it faster. But now the fake wireless charging is considered a premium feature somehow. Hope Asus keep this sh!t out of their lineup.

SD888 and 16gb of ram is a huge overkill and unnecessary price hike for such type of device. SD870/860 or even 780 is completely fine for a smaller form factor. More important is a true camera without 2mp space wasters. In fact the best mini will be a refresh of mi9se. It's a pity that Xiaomi ditched it.
