Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ to have 50MP main cam, proper telephoto lens

23 June 2021
In the S20 and S21 generations a 64 MP cam was used for high res shots, zooming and 8K video, but things could be very different next year.

The first question I ask when I'm thinking of upgrading is what does the new phone offer? If the answer is very little I don't bother. So for companies to stay in business they need to provide variety. This whole thread is about the vstiety of cameras in mobile phones.

The smaller flagships are not supposed to miss out on features. They are just supposed to be smaller. And they are cheaper for smaller screens and batteries. They are not dramatically cheaper to take away other features as well.

Smartphone manufacturers should strive to steal GoPro's market share. They have already stolen the market share of entry-level point-and-shoot cameras.

Make the phones durable and waterproof, the cameras stable, and the microphone sound quality good enough for them to easily replace action cameras for use on drones or down a slide at a water park.

There is essentially no logical connection between these two statements. Full frame sensors are very large and naturally so are individual pixel sizes, which means read noise would be the greatest contributing factor to any image noise produced, hence you see their pixel sizes having much less influence on SNR than those of smaller phone sensors which suffer from higher shot noise level.

Anonymous, 23 Jun 2021Yes, tell that to Google and Apple that used to have 1,55 m... moreApple never used a sensor with 1.55µm pixel pitch, and in Google's case they made the sensor smaller on Pixel 2 to compensate for the increase in camera module size (because at that time everyone was still quite sensitive about a camera bump), which resulted in clear degradation in image quality from OG Pixel at base ISO. If the pixel size didn't matter then nobody would've even had an idea of using a QB sensor in the first place nor Google/Apple ever considered using a larger sensor for their latest flagships.
