Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ to have 50MP main cam, proper telephoto lens

23 June 2021
In the S20 and S21 generations a 64 MP cam was used for high res shots, zooming and 8K video, but things could be very different next year.

SigmaR, 23 Jun 2021All cameras have the same sensor size? What does it mean? All are full frame cameras.
This means that larger pixel is better at night is myth.
Current tech has solved this issue years ago.

The camera with near 8 micron pixels got saturated by light before other that have pixels of 5,6 micron or smaller. One of them has 3,75 micron.

But they do keep the distance most of the time.

What's wrong with you guys !!
      It's not going to happen.
Samsung will use a new sensor. Probably 1/1.1" 144MP Nona Bayer sensor. which will be able to do 16-1 binning for extremely low light 9 or 8MP image and up to 4k videos.

If you have not noticed, phones with periscope that uses more than 5x the FL of main camera have small sensors to keep whole system small.
There is no way any phone comes with 240mm periscope and 1/2", 1/1.8" or 1/1.5" sensor.

Also, OEMs need to have space to keep cpu away from cameras to avoid the heat that can damage the cmos.

walkman8, 23 Jun 2021It's about time! And I really hope S22 Ultra follows ... moreI doubt S22 Ultra is gonna use this 50MP.

Samsung Semicon is working on 1" sensors with 200, 300 and 600MP.
Also many WRGB sensors (108MP with 82MP of them as "white" pixels).

                It's about time!
And I really hope S22 Ultra follows the same footsteps.
Sensor size and quality over mp race.
Why should it have 200 MP sensor? Because it sounds "Ultra"?
For Pete's sake, Mi 11 Ultra has a 50 mp sensor and nobody dares to call it "Vanilla".

If I had any saying in creating S22 Ultra's camera, this would be my ideal configuration:
1)50 MP main GN3 sensor (same size as MI11 Ultra, but improved) with perfectly usable full 50 MP photos
2)50 MP ultrawide from One Plus 9 Pro that also acts as macro unit
3)50 MP periscope with variable optical zoom (2x-5x or 3x-10x)
4)same 40 mp selfie cam, just positioned on the side (less intrusive)
All cameras (except) selfie capable of video recording @8k 30 fps & 4k 120 fps

IMHO Ultrawide should have more than 12 MP, for such a large scene taken on ultrawide there are no enough details, I hope they add at least macro
                      I was expecting 3x for S22 and 5x optical zoom on S22+
                      Maybe S23 :-)

Anonymous, 23 Jun 2021Just little curiosity. For those that still believe pixel ... moreYour data (withouth any source, eventough) simply shows one side of the story. There are many other reasons why low megapixels is far better than high megapixels on smartphones.

The low light image quality is far better than concescions due to the limitations of bright light scenes : someone will more probably notice the low image quality in low light than the limited bright light the camera can handle.

Due to the low megapixels count, well the speed at wich the sensor can be read is far higher, thus enabling features as better HDR which will be better on low megapixel cameras (yes, imaging DSP are faster and faster every year, but this is a fact).

Finally, colors will be better because there is less noise due to high megapixel count.

To sum up, high megapixel count is not as bad (the first high megapixel camera that was out was the Nokia 808, in... 2012 I think and its image quality is still on par with recent cameras, it even had an ND filter for bright scenes) but it must be well made.

Just little curiosity. For those that still believe pixel size matter in 2021.

This data shows single pixel saturation by light. All cameras have same sensor size.
Higher value means pixel can grab more light before it reaches its limits.
This list shows that, among the 5 cameras with better values, only two have less than 40MP (both are 24MP).
While the weakest of this list , is the one with 12MP.

Afther almost two years of using Huawei devices (P10,20,30 and 40) i buy (change P40 for S21) S21 wich Exsynos 2100 chip because in my country SD chips are not available in Samsung devices.

                              Yes, phone is fast BUT!

Battery life is garbage compare to Huawei.
                              Charging speed is JOKE!
Camera is GARBAGE compare to last two my phones P30 and P40!
Phone is too HOT when i taking photos using Stock or Gcam mod.
Front camera is worst front camera i ever find on any phone!
                              S21+ is the same story.

Great looking phone, good software, good dimensions, and that is it.

I have a friend who bought the S10 Plus just after it came out and I cannot recommend they upgrade any time soon. actually, digital zoom with a hi-res cam is better than an optical 3x lens because, you will have lossless zoom up to 3x. in optical lens, you have to stick with digital zoom of 12MP main cam up to 3x. I see the lossless zoom benefit in s21. if they will use a 75-80mm lens for zooming in s22, they need to provide lossless digital zoom with the hi-res main cam, too.
