Xiaomi to address the proximity sensor issue on some of its phones

22 August 2021
Xiaomi has already found a new supplier for its sensors and will push OTA update to the affected devices.

I have the F3. It certainly still has issues, even after the most recent update.

I am more confident that they will fix the green tint issue via an update than I am that they will fix the proximity issue if it comes from a faulty hardware sensor.

I know that the screen can do perfect blacks because I see them in HDR demo videos on Youtube that they upload for Samsung and LG OLED TV's.

I also see good clean blacks in the settings menu in dark mode, as well as on Twitter in dark mode, so it seems that there is nothing wrong with the screen. It is most likely a software issue.

...but if Xiaomi themselves are going so far as to dump their proximity sensor supplier, then I can only assume that they have concluded that a new driver or updated calibration isn't going to fix the problem, and that it stems from a hardware issue.

I think that they should compensate their customers if this is the case as it really impacts the end user a lot and is a very annoying problem. I had a call from a friend earlier and even after locking the screen and putting the phone in my pocket to talk over BT, it still managed to place him on hold all by itself - 3 times!

Really annoying.

Anonymous, 22 Aug 2021their phones are cheaper to buy and use than the proximity ... moreThat's why going the cheap market is a slippery road. Once something big happen like the Galaxy Note 7, then the class lawsuit will probably kill the company and then you end up losing a company that sells cheap phones and then others will slowly increase their price to prevent same thing from happening. If you sell phones cheaply to people who constantly complain about every little thing, they'll still complain no matter the price of the phone.

Anonymous, 22 Aug 2021I'm not sure what the problem is really. The article d... morethe article literally talks about the proximity sensor, which is important when you do loudspeaker calls so you don't accidentally touch anything.

I'm glad I chose to supoort Xiaomi because they actually listened to the complaints and when they want they do some or the time or most and I shouldn't worry about proximity issues on some phones, especially the Note 10 Pro for example, now I could recommend it.

I have Mi 10T Pro and the proximity sensor doesn't work 90% of time. I think the screen goes dark when I put it against the a ear, but very soon kits up and I end up pressing all kinds of buttons with my ear. I almost can't use the phone for phone calls!

They should also address green tint issue and black crush that appears only while watching HDR videos.
This is a software issue and they could fix it by a software update .

This is an issue that very few reviewers mention unfortunately. Many review focus on things like screen quality, gaming performance and cameras but often don't mention the basics of a phone, like call quality. A problematic proximity sensor is very annoying for people who take/make a lot of calls, especially if they use their phone a lot for business purposes. The only English language reviewer I've seen who always discusses call quality and issues with proximity sensors is Geekyranjit. He has raised this issue on numerous devices e.g. poco f3/mi11x. It is good to see that Xiaomi is trying to address it though by dropping one of their suppliers.

It has been a problem of all Xiaomi phones with ultrasonic sensors for over 3 years. 3 years they made this trashy phones with non working proximity sensors and kept silence about the fix. I bought mi10t PRO on start not knowing it has ultrasonic sensor, since Xiaomi doesn't mention it anywhere. Xiaomi has lost tens of millions of their fans by cheapen up 0.01$ on the one of the basic and essential function like making a normal call. I predict, that they will not fix it since it is hardware issue. Buy Samsung Huawei or Apple don't ever trust Xiaomi no one knows what they will screw up in their next phone.

When you start selling more devices you will expect more issues popping up. Samsung, Apple and now Xiaomi have experienced this. No OEM is free from issues. If Sony or others were selling 200 million units a year they will be having alot more issues .

Anonymous, 22 Aug 2021Oh, they dont know what the issue is? What BS. They use ... morethey use an ultrasonic proximity sensor, just like the name, they use ultrasonic sound as the proximity sensor, you can try blocking the top mic / top speaker and it will trigger the proximity sensor, they also use that in combination with gyro also, tho i dont know if the light sensor is used or not. i believe that the problem lies in the algorithm they used, and also some 3rd party cases that blocks the mic/speakers too much.

the lates cn beta on the poco f3 solves most of my proximity issues.
