Keeping in mind that these are the same people who brushed off TouchID when it came out in favour of their outdated passcodes. These in display fingerprint readers are just delaying the inevitable.
I do agree however that FaceID needs to evolve. Greater angles and ability to still unlock with a face mask while still being super secure would be ideal.

Its not a mere software fix, this is going to require additional hardware that needs to developed, tested and produced, in scales sufficient to meet iPhone levels of demand.
Turn around on that kind of process is not months.

It's funny how everyone keep saying notch is intrusion or "cutout" in display when it's really an extension of it. The notch "horns" are the extension where they put permanent status icons like time, signal and battery so they don't sit inside the rectangular viewing area eating away actual content display space. We can thank stupid app developers who kept shoving stuff into the "horns" instead of leaving it to status icons which have a dedicated place there and then we had apps not showing stuff because it was underneath notch.
One could only call it intrusion or cutout if we first had full size edge to edge displays and then someone slapped notch on it. But that wasn't the case. We had displays with massive chins and foreheads, then we had notches and now we have edge to edge displays with popup cams or underdisplay selfie cams or edge to edge displays with punch holes which are actual intrusions because they sit in the middle of actual content. Notch actually doesn't.

First Face ID was never a necessary alternative to under screen finger print readers, Apple could have easily purchased and implemented any number of the early example's of such available at that time. However, doing so would have compromised the user experience in a way Apple would not have wished. So Face ID was the result of a massive R&D effort to make Biometric security more convenient, in line with a new design form factor. It's up to the user to decide how successful it is in that regard.
Second Face ID is mature with high reliability and low failure rate. It not currently working with masks is an unfortunate limitation exposed by a global pandemic, one that Apple could hardly have foreseen now could they. This very article suggests steps are being taken to address that limitation.
Third, I don't worship Apple, I merely use some of their products, get of your soap box anon!

DaFink, 26 Aug 2021Oh look another apple hating anon, what a surprise! Who ... moreTouchID wasn't used in the iPhone X because Apple didn't have an under-display fingerprint reader at the time but they wanted a full display phone. Which meant they had to go with faceID which requied a humongous cutout off the top of the display. FaceID has never been mature or perfect. It still misses scans, gets fooled by twins and doesn't work with a mask. What they could do is something like a side or even under-display fingerprint reader. But they're cheap you see. It'll cut into their profits so they're not doing it. You who worship Apple can't see them for the cheap company they are.

Touch ID is great example of that, remember why Touch ID was instant hit? it worked from all the angles, it took few years android phones to have fingerprint scanner which works from all angles, i remember how bad those android fingerprint scanners were after Touch ID came.

[deleted post]Oh look another apple hating anon, what a surprise!
Who gives a toss about ‘first’, as a consumer I care about reliability. I’m happy to let the Android world fumble around with early, often clumsy implementations of new tech. Under screen finger scanners that don’t quite scan fingers, HRR displays that slam battery life and have to be used with a bunch of caveats, fast charging solutions that can heat a entire house as a side effect for example.
I was an Android user for many years, had my share of devices with poorly implemented ‘firsts’ included only so the manufacture could boast about a new feature.
Switched to iPhone as, for me, it features mature applications of technology that are reliable. Not going to say it’s prefect, nothing ever is. But at least I know that when these ‘new’ things come to the iPhone they are at least as well implemented as possible.

onesujeet, 26 Aug 2021That's great, I hope apple could invent something like thatWell Apple did help bring biometrics to the mainstream of smartphone tech with Touch ID. Yes an Android device did take a shot at it before, but nobody seemed interesting in replicating the Motorola Atrix's attempt's at biometrics now did they??

rizki1, 26 Aug 2021I'm fair to say this because this is not a cheap phone... moreNeither are all the Android flagships and they break down all the time. It's just that generally no one cares abou those, but when iPhones have issues you'll be reading about them for freaking decade. Just moments ago someone was whining about antennagate from freaking 10 years ago...

With fingerprint, it was already annoyance when I had gloves or I just didn't register that finger out of all 10 that I have on my hands and there wasn't even a pandemic (in which we had to wear surgical gloves too). Most people only register thumb of their dominant hand and that's it. I registered 6 fingers, each individually, 3 per hand, so I could unlock it with any hand in almost any position. Ideally would be all 10 fingers so it really works under any condition.
