Flashback: Toshiba TG01, the first smartphone to hit 1GHz, is now mostly forgotten

28 November 2021
Perhaps it was overshadowed by the HTC HD2 that launched only months later. Or perhaps the 1 GHz CPU and 4.1" display were just gimmicks.

What is considered "Mini" today was a normal sized phone back then. Xiaomi Mi5 that I had several years ago feels Mini compared to iPhone XR that I have now and it's only 1" difference. And XR isn't even that large as there are way larger phones now. iPhone 13 Mini for example is 5.4". That's flagship size from just 5 years ago. Just to put things into perspective a bit.

Reality check: Sony is repeatedly doubling down on mini phones and they have dropped from one of the major manufacturers to a brand competing with discontinued LG phones and Fairphone.

Reality check: Samsung release 1 flip phone this year and it is a whopping success to the extent they discontinue the Note series and postpones the S21 FE by half a year.

Mini screens are useless. Anyone arguing they have a place in mobile either works for a failing brand or just doesn't understand reality.

It's obvious fact that samsung was just lazy with the minis.
Like they said it was flagship by name but not by tech.
They were cheaper phones. With Samsung just putting little effort in and then letting them fade.

There's nothing smart about a phone with a screen size of a feature phone. That is the only reason virtually no one buys them. Not because of your personal selective view of what's "flagship" and what's not.

If you want a real flagship mini device in 2021 the ONLY option is the Flip3. It's the smallest smartphone I've ever owned and it comes with a massive 6.7-inch display. Best of both worlds.

Wasn't it for Japan market only ? Then like why should we remember anything that was specifically for Japanese market ? I remember a lot of good phones were for Japanese only. Like the time when we start to see cameras on a phone the best one's was for only Japanese market and they got everything nice in hardware too. Now they are just behind on everything as China is dominating now
