Flashback: Toshiba TG01, the first smartphone to hit 1GHz, is now mostly forgotten

28 November 2021
Perhaps it was overshadowed by the HTC HD2 that launched only months later. Or perhaps the 1 GHz CPU and 4.1" display were just gimmicks.

About Panasonic I don't have any new information. They made some cheap phones, but for example GSMArena did not post any new phones on their website for a while.

Mobilemaster, 28 Nov 2021It is sad seeing many Japanese companies out of the smartph... morePanasonic does. But only for India. Those Eluga.

Sharp is not entirely Foxconn. Just 2/3.

It is sad seeing many Japanese companies out of the smartphone industry. Now, only a few remains: 1. Sony
      2. Sharp(which is owned by Foxconn since 2016)
      3. Fujitsu
      4. Kyocera.
The following companies no longer makes phones: 1. Panasonic.
      2. Casio( yes, they made phones as well)
      3. Mitsubishi( yes, they made phones as well, till 2007).
      4. Hitachi
      5. Toshiba
      6. Sanyo( Kyocera bought the company back in 2007 as far as I know).
      7. Nec
And there was another one which I don't remember.
So the Japanese had a good start. Maybe if they would have make premium phones for the whole world, some of these might be still around, who knows.

Sharp and even Sanyo, both from Japan, probably had better success with mobile than Panasonic and Toshiba did. I enjoyed all of Japanese brands. Was into Aiwa when Sony owned a little over half of them in 1998.

I've owned something from most of these Japanese companies...

        Sony
        Panasonic (Matsushita)
        Toshiba
        Sharp
        Sanyo
        Nintendo
        Sega
        Canon
        Nikon
        Fujitsu
        Fujifilm
        JVC
        NEC
        Kyocera
        Hitachi
        Yamaha
        Pioneer
        TDK
        Casio
        Honda/Acura
        Toyota/Lexus
        Mitsubishi

Then the Lost Generation happened next to a recession and most of them got lost by the 2000s.

My favorites are Sony, Nintendo, Sega, Honda, Toyota, Canon, Panasonic, and Toshiba.

It would not sell that much if it was mini version of C series.
This is why Samsung S Mini were not popular. My nephew had S3 mini, it was very crap.

Idea would be to have small phones without too many compromises.
Iphone 13 mini is too small to have a Pro version.

Sony, Panasonic, and Toshiba were like the Big 3 from Japan in the 1990s. I used to own some Toshiba products and they excellent quality. Same with Panasonic. But none of those three could really conquer cell phones like they did for general tech.

The Flip, 28 Nov 2021I've been reading Reddit comments about this. The swit... moreI had a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Snapdragon 805 variant) that had the eMMC issue, phone pretty much just died and then would turn on every now and then but reboot or switch off completely after a year of usage.

I remember this beast, it really opened the doors for the 1Ghz phones we began seeing from late 2009 into 2010. I believe the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i also had this same chip (QSD8250) along with HTC Desire, Google Nexus One and some other Androids, most of the phones with this chip rocked 1400-1500mAh batteries. Some interesting times in mobile that was. I can only imagine how long this TG01 lasted in terms of endurance with a 1000mAh battery as the Xperia X10 was average at best and only got better when it got Android 2.1 Eclaire.

Anonymous, 28 Nov 2021It is not impossible. But they you need to cut some stuff.... moreBut not everyone is looking for S21 ultra cameras. As for droid companies, they can just make a phone like the SE iPhone but they're lazy or just volumes oriented

Speaking of 2013, I used to own a Note 3 briefly and folks should go to its comment section. Lots of people still praise that phone. One comment said he or she used it for 8 straight years. That's pretty good quality from "Scamsung".

Now phones from 2019 or later should last even longer with much better hardware and software vs. 8 years ago. Many of us who get nostalgic don't really give enough credit to the current phones we have now. We'll only complain it no longer comes with a charger.

Phones today are AWESOME. Appreciate them. Was using my Pixel 3 after not using it for 2 months and it's still runs AWESOME for a phone from 3 years ago. Many phones from 2017 and later can last quite a long time with the only real maintenance is change the battery every 2 to 3 years and don't update the software so much.

The switch from eMMC to UFS really boosted many smartphones' longevity. From 2009-2016, this was still a problem since eMMC is known to corrupt data as time goes on.

I've read complaints about the S7/S7 edge which still had eMMC and some for the S8 which supposedly had UFS but Samsung removed from their spec sheet. By S9 in 2018, no more issues. UFS 2.1 became standard.

Do not expect phone small like S3 with S21 Ultra camera and 3500mAh.

Also, the android makers no longer makes sub-14cm phones because sales are too low compared to larger phones.
A "S21 mini" would not sell as much as the S21+.

Anonymous, 28 Nov 2021I bet it could keep same performance after months unlike sa... moreOh no it couldnt, but very few tg01's worked for that long anyway.
They really were an awful device.

It's forgotten because it was the worst phone I've ever had, due to it being made by Toshiba, it had awful quality control, in the few months between tg01 and HTC hd2 release, I went through 4 tg01's, returned for various reasons, and even if you got a good one, it was still a rubbish phone, so bad in fact that Orange did me a briliant deal on my first hd2, a straight swap, because tg01 was so bad they did a recall on them.
The HTC HD2 fully deserves its legendary status, it remained THE developers phone for andriod for at least 3 years, even though it wasn't optimised for android, eventually, I managed to get my hands on a yank t-mobile version, with the double ram, meaning that the hd2 2 was the first phone to have 2gb of ram, if you knew how to unlock the extra 128mb of ram supposedly set aside for video work, and then add in that hd2's could run full Windows desktop os's, and ran a version of XP embedded, better than some laptops could, all you needed was a powered USB networking hub, beating Samsungs dect idea by ten years.
Still the best phone yet released, if htc had listened to us on xdaForum and simply built the hd3 that lots of us begged them to build, they might well be in a better position today.

Most of my family members (uncles, aunts, cousins) use samsung.
Cant even say how many times they have complained about phone too slow.
People that basically use phone for calls, messages and social media.
Even my sister (s8 owner) says her phone is slow. And she bought in mid 2018.
