Weekly poll: how much storage do you use on your phone? Are microSD slots still important?

19 June 2022
Camera resolutions keep rising, phones can now record 8K video, mobile apps are becoming more complex - all of that takes up more and more space on your phone.

Thanks to Huawei I am able to back up my phone data from my Mate 20 Pro to my NM card. Very convenient to use.

128GB is more than enough for me. I only use microSD card to store my pics, musics, and videos. I don't need a lot of storage capacity as apps are still installed at internal storage in the first place. Only certain apps like Telegram and Spotify to name just two have the ability to store files inside microSD card.

Slow cards are useless! But some people love to slow down their expensive flagship.

Not Vital has the highest votes, and next year when companies start to remove the charging port, people will call it innovation lol..

Well, a lot of midrange phones are capped at 128 gigs of storage, so a SD Card slot is a must have in the long run

It's always nice to have external storage option to keep important files into, as it can be a disaster if the phone fails one time and then all of my important files are gone. Not that it happens all the time, but it's always great to have peace of mind, knowing that my important files are safe just in case that some terrible software update would brick my phone or when the phone requires factory reset.

Also, having microSD card expandability doesn't take away the option of using online cloud storage, so I don't see any valid reason not to have external memory option for users like me who definitely need it.

Sad to see people don't realize that expanding storage isn't only reason to use microSD card. A microSD be can taken out and placed into another device and you have immediate access to the data stored in it. No need to spend time transfering.
This is very important for those into modding because internal storage has lots of restriction nowadays. To install a new rom, you must wipe internal storage. It's a real pain to backup and restore hundreds of gigabytes of data everytime a custom ROM is installed. Not to mention how easy it is to forget backing up and you just lost all your data moment you flashed a custom ROM. Had you saved those data into microSD card, they won't be touched in that process.
Finally if your phone died somehow, then data stored in it won't be accessible. If they were installed in microSD, accessing them is a walk in the park!
In conclusion removing microSD slot is an evil act like removing headphone jack port.

MicroSD is too slow from my experience, even for storing photos because the thumbnails and photos would only load with a big delay. But I don’t have a problem with people who want it.

You could survive with about 128GB easily, that is if cloud storage was good enough, like mine is too slow, so is the internet, so it's hard to browse photos shot some time back. That's why I need space even if I upload.
I do have clean memory tho when I buy new phone...

Less than 10gb free on the internal 128gb. Less than 100mb free on the 400gb sd card.

And as for being "safer",cloud stored, great, uptil provider has problem or decides not to bother anymore ,as have both Google and amazon, sometimes with no way to extract data back except to download and store elsewhere, try that with 38gb of pics on the end of a 500kb max mobile data link, that 38gb would have cost the equivalent of 2.5 days wages, when all amazon had to do was nothing,it was just them being stupidly snotty over one of their free pic data store account types ,but no other option was given but to download from one amazon account back up to another amazon account, also free !!

I personally don't use too much storage on my phone, but I wish I did. I'm one of those people who routinely clean up their phone from videos, pictures, etc. because I know the storage is eventually gonna run out and I don't want this to happen at an inconvenient time. I wish I could just not worry about storage. My biggest gripe with microSD card slots though, is Android doesn't do enough to help you utilize the extra storage. It's janky and I wish it was seamless from the get go. You can't just set a few ground rules like installing games on the SD card by default, you have to move each game individually.

Having an external memory slot is very important considering many a factors. Not everyone stores their data on cloud services. Most importantly when the display freezes or breaks, touch doesn't work, the external memory is the best of backup. The memory developers are so lazy on developing faster storage, mobile starage has gone faster with UFS, while the external memory card makers are still stuck at age old technologies. Why don't they develop UFS for external memory cards

Currently i have 128GB, it's enough for my needs. I can live without MicroSD slots/cards, they're useless for me anyways.

if no microSD slot in almost all 5G phone, then nanoSD / NM Card is a solution since Huawei did their first nanoSD made with confirmedly faster as twice than microSD. but the price will be expensive than microSD's price
