Weekly poll: how much storage do you use on your phone? Are microSD slots still important?

19 June 2022
Camera resolutions keep rising, phones can now record 8K video, mobile apps are becoming more complex - all of that takes up more and more space on your phone.

Sort by:

I have 256gb built-in but also have 128gb nm card on my huawei p30 pro, but i don't use it for music.

On the other hand, I use dedicated high resolution audio player with 64gb built-in and 512gb sd card, just for music.

Thinking there should be an option which states that:

"I'd only buy a phone without an sd slot when base storage is at least "

People are complaining about the microSD cards because of their slowness and easy to fail (there's too many knockoffs out there and people tend to purchase cheaper microSD cards)
I can say there's microSD express format out there but the factories are still not put enough effort to make it into mainstream. I don't know the reason.

For me I need to have that expandable storage option. If I don't want it I will go for iphone.

Darth Revan, 19 Jun 2022Well, a lot of midrange phones are capped at 128 gigs of st... moreNot for everyone. I am currently using 19.9 gigs out of 64 on my personal phone and about 22 out of 128gigs on my work phone. No need to call download porn/movies/music when one can stream everything nowadays.

          Next weeks question poll:
do we need more than basic internal Ram/Rom anyway, as everything can now be stored to, or app streamed by Cloud internet servers?

          Next, next weeks question poll:
do we need telephony, as audio calls can now be made via numerous internet based apps?

Next, next, next weeks question poll:
do we need usb port on a phone anyway, as wireless charging and headphones make way?

What we will be left with at that cutting end, should not be called a Smartphone anyway, but just a combo AirCloudSmartie MediaBar.

            First i typed 64GB-128GB.
Had Moto X4 for nearly 4 years with a 64GB storage and i was happy enough.
Now since of last week of jukly last year have Xiaomi Mi 11 lite 5G with 128GB storage and is good enough.

On the next poll i typed for having an SD slot is nice but not necessary.
Since i have one 256Gb card from a very long time ago and i using it it would be good to have an SD slot. But is not necessary for me.

It will be nice to have a microSD slot. It will be useful to buy a microSD card from Samsung Pro Plus range or the Evo Plus range as it will have quicker access. It is a good alternative to the restricted 128GB of internal storage though.

samsung is a joke! i bought a tab s7+ and put 256GB sandisk usb stick in it. the tablet couldn't read it because it had ntfs format. my old huawei mate 20 pro from 2018 can read ntfs format!

Almost everything nowdays comes from cloud/stream etc. Only thing which really takes space is 4K videos and i rarely takes videos so when i bought phone i go for smallest option and will still have lot of unneeded space.

Yesterday itself I purchased 256GB micro SD card for my Galaxy Note 8. The reason behind it was 1. My old 64 GB SD card became absolute in terms of read/write speed. 2. I had to delete old contents just to add new content.

Frequent read/write leads to deteriorating performance. My current 64 GB read speed is 10MBps and write speed was 3MBps.I bought new 256GB SD card which has upto 100MBps claimed read/write speed. Ofcourse actual speed will be bit lower depending upon various conditions.

I work editing for youtube video on my phone and all related stock footage, file photo remain undelited because usually don't have tume to delete one by one of them. That why i need more storage. Currently 128 + 128 GB is about to full. Now i will have to free. Considering to buy next time 512 GB sd card. But price is high

Prior to my last 2 phones I always got phones with a microsd card slot, and I used to buy a quality Samsung evo/extreme or a SanDisk card, had to be uh3 class 10, 128-256gb, cost of card have cheapened a bit so wasn't too bad. Last 2 phones had no expandable storage so made sure I got the 256gb models, they both have ufs 2.1 and 3.1 respectively. I used to be in the "I wont buy a phone without a card slot" crowd but its not been too bad as most my important stuff gets backed up anyways
