Sony Ericsson W902 gets previewed, not loved

16 July, 2008
Only a few days since the first photos of the Sony Ericsson's rumored new Walkman - W902 surfaced online and its first preview popped up. The five megapixel...

Ok, I can’t take Eldar’s biassed BS anymore. Here’s the gist of the mail I sent him 5 minutes ago:

“I’ve been reading your site for a while now and I have to say, your SE hate is going off the rocker these days.

It used to be constructive, but no it just doesn’t make sense anymore. The W580 keypad problems? They were rectified a long and i mean a LONG time ago. I have a 6 month old W580 which i use pretty extensively and guess what? No broken keypad! Same goes for every person I know who has the same handset. And people buy it for the pedometer? Puhlease. I bought it coz It was a WALKMAN. So did most other people. You can complain all you like about paper specs and how it is inferior to the Xpressmusic (Interesting to see the inverse correlation between your SE hate and NOKIA love), but face the facts dude, the NOKIA doesn’t come anywhere close to a walkman when it comes to user experience. Try juggling 2000 songs in a W phone and do the same on an XpressMusic. See how good your “DSP chip” is in managing the playlist efficiently.

It’s not a late call, it’s a periodic update. I know for a fact that if the phone WASN’T updated, you’d be crying “Bloody murder! SE lets it’s portfolio go static!” or something similar. Also, consumers don’t upgrade to an updated version of the same phone, they upgrade to a higher segment (Like me, who will be upgrading to an Alicia). It is the lower segment customers that the new phone targets. Basic business principle.

Lastly, the camera is not spectacular coz it’s not an imaging specialized phone. Ever heard of this little thing called “product segmentation”? I wouldn’t expect so, considering that you are mesmerized by NOKIAs.

I have concluded that I can’t trust you anymore for unbiased reviews. Do what you do best. You have just lost a longtime reader.

Synn.”

i hated this w phone. i love se i had w850 w910 and now w960 and this isn't a good looking feature phone. OK the 5 mp but what the hell is with the design i believe a lot of great phones are being made by se and they are great but this isn't one of them.

Good old mobile review - they are so biased against SE, I don't even bother reading their reviews anymore. One consistent complaint is that SE doesn't have a 3.5mm jack. Reason for that in my eyes is glaringly obvious, as they offer a headset that has a mic built in. This is after all, a phone first. What do you use a phone for? To make calls! Hence the headset. What are you supposed to do when you receive a call while listening to music on a Nokia device using your own headphones? Hold the phone to your face to speak into it. Not ideal, is it? And SE's included headsets have the best included headsets in their class anyway! Is sound quality so poor in SE devices that it deserves to be shot down by Mobile review? Doubt it, I can certainly vouch for the good quality of the tunes pumped out by the phones. Maybe SE feel the same and don't install additional chips because it's a waste? If you're such an audiophile that you need a dedicated chip, own headphones etc etc it's more than likely that you'll be using your own media player which supports Ogg Vorbis format, or has the capacity to store a a large files that are encoded in a high bitrate.

SE should carry on the track they are working now! Enhancements would be good, but following the pack for the sake of it is foolish!

The reviewers on Mobile Review are great...in spite of their horrible English.

          My thoughts:
          1. GSMarena SHOULD post info about other review sites. That is the professional thing to do.

          2. This Sony phone is expensive, so it needs to be reviewed against the competition. For the same price as this feature phone, you can get an N95. What's that you say? The interface of SE is better. I don't agree, but so what.

          3. Music phones should have 3.5mm jack, and baring that, a 2.5mm jack. Proprietary connectors...especially those that come un-hinged from the phone when its in the pocket, don't cut it.

Samsung= is pushing the bar this year. Soul lineup, and the Omnia....
SE= c905, w980, w707, f305. Invented the music shake, and SenseMe. However, too many other mediocre products.
            HTC= good stuff! Fresh designs.
LG= Very good looks. But very unrelable. "Beautiful Gimmicks"
Nokia= Stood still. Nothing innovative. Still bragging about n95.

W902 is basically the C902 in another shell and having Walkman firmware.

Design is getting pretty old; add to that lack of dedicated sound chip and standard audio jack.

Storage is not impressive because the 8GB declared was the size of the memory stick and not the internal memory.

SonyEricsson has slowed down in innovating, though not as slow as Motorola. I hope it will exert more effort in catching up with Nokia and Samsung. It was a very admirable company during the reign of K750 and K800.

to people commenting that mobile review is bias against S.E.
eldar(main reviewer) was harsh on the n95 as well(though he admits loving every bits of it and uses it as his main phone atm)

point is...in their review they say everything that comes into their mind

                      and are frank about it...

when S.E. doesnt copy nokia they tend to...suck
but when they copy their own products look....they still suck
so what will S.E. do then?

k700-k810 were the best things that S.E. offered I think they should focus on that more...

or the w800-w900 gen at least :P

A phone is a phone. Each brand has its pros and cons and appeals to different personalities. It's pointless to jostle over which brand is best. There are more important things in life to worry about.

Samsung get DivX Certified, Bang & Olufsen ICEPower Amplifier, DSP and Dolby Surround 5.1 Channel. That's enough for music & movie lover like me. i450 now, i8510 next.

I have always been SE throughout my life, but the reviewer is definitely correct... Sony Ericsson is starting to go downhill and although I love their user interface, their products are not up to par.

As far as I know mobile-review always test product based of hardware platform. It's good & I think they not affiliated with Nokia. SE fans just jealous. If u think smart, Samsung i450 Ultra Music is the best music phone right now. All review site prove it.

                                        This is weird....
Since when did GSM arena post Other people's Reviews as News?

And people complaining about designs... SE designs seems repeatitive because they have more models with slight variations. Designs is about ergonomics not pretty to look at. Read reviews on Diamond, and fashion based phones. Those phones sell on gimmicks and looks. I don't think thats reliable.
