Android launches #GetTheMessage campaign to convince Apple to support RCS messaging

12 August 2022
Apple could adopt RCS and improve the messaging experience for its users.

Wojtek, 12 Aug 2022Google and Android can eff-off to hell. RCS is not complete... moreGoogle ended up having to host RCS and bake it into Android because mobile carriers ignored RCS. It's not a perfect solution. I think Apple should either open iMessage or support RCS, but personally I don't care a whole lot. The people I know that use iPhones usually talk on Google Chat or Google Meet. Mainly because it was cross-platform before iMessage came to be. I'm not bothered by peer pressure. If people think a green or blue bubble says something about an individual I'll let them stay in their own bubble. I don't have time for such people.

potato4k, 12 Aug 2022I don't understand why Google do this. What does Apple... moreiMessage, the stock "texting" application in iOS, does not support RCS regardless of carrier support (i.e., even if your carrier has RCS it will not work in a stock iPhone). That is very much an Apple choice, well documented in internal discussions about how the iMessage protocol is artificially locking their users to the ecosystem -- adopting RCS would hit their profits by giving the choice to jump ship; right now you have an artificial limitation that *makes* you buy an iPhone (rather than just choosing it) and don't even realize what Apple is doing.

The funniest part of this campaign is that even if Google managed to convince Apple to support RCS, there would be literally nothing that would stop Apple from continue using green bubbles for messages from Android phones and blue ones for iMessage.

I don't think asking those many people using WA to switch is a realistic campaign. Not many people are tech literate. Asking them to change messaging platforms when the current one they use is still working is... nearly impossible.

This is the only reason we have to even consider RCS as a viable option while it is not.
Phone number text messaging(SMS) is still as important for quick updates, OTPs, general public information and such.
While instant messaging that requires internet to function should be separate.
Imagine the confusion among dumb users when internet service or cloud servers have issues and you are getting some messages(SMS) but some do not go through at all(instant messaging).

I don't understand why Google do this. What does Apple have to do with RCS? Google should be talking with the carriers as pretty much most carriers around the world couldn't care less about RCS. Sounds like Google is lazy and rather does smear campaign on Apple instead.

                  But apple will not.
Like apple phones needs Itunes to cooperate with any non apple device this will be same they will not work nor support a lot better and user friendly android in any way without asking money from google.

Anonymous, 12 Aug 2022It’s a US thing. The rest of the world uses Whatsapp. And that also needs to change too. Who better to point its flaws than WhatsApp's original creator (Brian Acton) -- yes, Signal was made by one of WhatsApp original creators. Whatever security features you may have heard WhatsApp has, Signal does it properly, that's why Signal was even created in the first place.

But all of that is moot right now, RCS is the universal standard that brings everyone together without need another app/friends "walled garden" -- and I very much like the openness of SMS (i.e., can message anyone anywhere) with the features of the later apps. Apple does not want this, the "walled garden" is the bread and butter of their business. Regulators should step in and make Apple implement RCS, but these are the same silly people that always levy record fines against Google, NEVER against the obvious anti-competition measures Apple takes (I'm looking at you EU "leaders").

Lol even huawei owners use Apple iPhones and laptops

Google and Android can eff-off to hell. RCS is not completely open standard (google has it's proprietery bits) and considering googles track record (using XMPP in the past, then dropping it to create walled garden like apple one, then this failing and then creating new chat app every year) I would be very weary implementing or using RCS... besides, RCS spec is not open and is driven by google so competition would have hard time keeping up with all stupid quirks... that's why google dropped XMPP because they had to consult all changes with the community...
