I mean sure, windows mobile has its place on the evolutionary path of smartphones, but to say modern smartphones owe their existence to it is a bit of a stretch. Look the reason Android debuted as a touch based operating system is down to Apple’s introduction of the iPhone and not due to windows mobile whom Google seemed perfectly happy to ignore.
So it would be more accurate to say modern smartphones owe more in terms of both physical design and UI to the iPhone and iOS than windows mobile. Not to take anything away from the contributions made by Windows in the overall evolution of the smartphone.

I recently switched from Android to iPhone. While I do like the phone, I see no benefit in the lightning connector. Apple just wants to have their own proprietary connector. It's as simple as that. Them going on about trusting their engineers etc is nothing but hot air.

Simple 95+% of apple consumer's won't even try anything from another company even if told or read about it they'll just either dismissed it as fake news , or act British and think anything else is generic brand 🤷, . Apple haven't been or released anything revolutionary since Jobs passed away. 14 pro adds decade old Android things and Apple's marketing and paying idiots who post these type not mention this only what apple are doing with the always on feature variable refresh 4ate, and the laughable dynamic island aka the hole punch selfie and fascial scanner . What is weird how there hasn't ben more outcry for people who shoot 4K video with phones regularly and transfer huge video files to PC via Lightning (which is USB 2.0). I personally didn't care at all, but there are people who do this regularly.

Fact is those early touch screen pda’s were niche experimental devices that tried putting touch screens on top of software never meant for that type of input. They were replaced by the initial smartphone standard introduced by the likes of Nokia and Blackberry, who were themselves then supplanted by Apple with the introduction of the iPhone, who were the first to join a full multi touch display with UI specifically designed for touch input.
So you can say Apple took some cues from the early niche pda era sure, an era they were early participants in by the way with devices like the Newton. But It’s an obvious and well established fact that Apple revolutionised the Smartphone industry when they launched the iPhone. Toppling both BlackBerry and Nokia from their previous dominance, whilst forcing Google to go back to the drawing board with Android in the process.
The industry was on a different track after the iPhone came along which is a level of success and Impact no PDA ever come near close to achieving.

Hopefully this alleviates your concerns. It's actually not that difficult to stick something in there if you wanted to try to get something out, but I could see how the lightning port would be more convenient for this.
