SShock, 26 Oct 2022Because good USB-C cables totally don't cost the same.... moreThis forces you to buy dongles and carry around extra cables. But it's not just a minor annoyance. Because it's a proprietary connector, official Lightning cables and accessories are often more expensive than the USB-C equivalent. These higher prices can lead consumers to buy non-certified cables, which might not function properly and could even damage your phone. And Lightning's starting to show its age

Lmao Apple created the situation themselves by keeping their lightning port proprietary while shouting left and right that it's better than microUSB. This is why tech oligopolies are bad. Corporate simps that keep defending them on the internet just adds more fuel. You guys don't realize that you literally sound like clowns. The influence of Apple needs to be reduced, and the upper middle class hearing that such a measure might be forcing them to switch to other brands like Xiaomi and Sony literally sounds like the apocalypse when it's nothing more than incentivizing the market to make better products at prices available for everyone.

It's so weird that they hate on USB-C because that's the connector on the other side of the lightning cable. Just put it on the other side to and done, zero effort required.
I really don't care anyway because I hate Apple management so hard that this is actually the reason I don't buy any of their products.

They talk about e-waste but the switch to USB-C could've been done years earlier and they could've given a good quality cable instead of one that breaks easily

I mean, as far as I know. It is just the airpods cases and iphones still using Lightining cable. Even the 10th gen Ipad has changed to Usb C although the 1 Gen Pencil still uses the lightining. Wouldn't it be easier for them to implement USB C? and not sell adapters for 10€? oh....wait now i see the problem

Meanwhile Google fined second time in a week in India. $162 million earlier and $114 million yesterday. Both for anti-competitive practices

UltraHD, 26 Oct 2022No, it's coming to 15 series. The law is starting from... moreWell, Apple may ship the adaptor from Lightening to usb C together with iPhone 15. Like they did when they disappear the jack.
Apple may not purely use the usb C in their phones....maybe.

number1115243, 26 Oct 2022they should ship an adapter that turns a lightning cable in... moreYep, as simple as that. A simple handy Lightining to USB C coverter is all that's required, (no wastage). Its pathetic to see Apple Guys/Engineers complain so much!

Very greedy. If they love lightning that much why not use it in ipad pro or MacBook. Remember when they start stopping put iphone adaptor in the box and at the same time change the supplying cable from usbA to usbC. Then they say old customers can help environment by using those old usbA adapter.

"claiming the switch to USB-C would create a lot of e-waste as people are pushed to buy new cables and discard the old ones".

Apple could have switched 5 years back when they switched the Mac line up there would be so much less e waste. The Move now will help check wastage later. Iphone user needn't go around looking Lightining cables. Just One common USB C cable that does it all.

Shame shame to apple for needing to be pushed by law when they could done this willingly years ago.

Omg am so surpriced ,what a news 😳 sikeeeeee!!

David, 26 Oct 2022Apple should have gone straight from their 30 pin connector... moreWhen lightning was established, USB-C didn't exist yet. Back then, even the EU was going to set microUSB as the standard for everything. In fact, lightning spurred the making of USB-C, and Apple was one of the first going all in on USB-C on their computers.

Maria, 26 Oct 2022When apple said "...is coming", it can be a year ... moreNo, it's coming to 15 series. The law is starting from next year if i read correctly (correct me if i'm wrong) so they're forced to switch to USB C next year.

"the switch to USB-C would create a lot of e-waste"

                                  Hahahahahahahahahahahahha
Coming from the company releasing the same phone every year, and removing the headphone jack so people buy wireless buds whose batteries die a few years or dobgles they constantly lose.

Will this be on all iPhones (worldwide) or just European Union countries?

rghaleb, 26 Oct 2022Why isn't Apple happy about it though? I get that they... moreThey just pretended they're not happy, while in the backend they're more than happy selling new cables and dongles for people.

Purely PR on Apple's part. Apple already moved to USB-C on iPads and Macs, so don't tell me they didn't plan to do the same on iPhone. They're simply milking Mfi licenses for as long as possible, and then pretended to not be happy with the EU decision. Now that they have established magsafe as an alternate revenue stream, they pretended to drag their feet to USB-C, while in reality they're probably happy to sell people dongles/adapters. Sleazy and greed.
