Anonymous, 24 Jan 2023Humanity desperately need a good alternative to iOS and Android. Windows Phone, BlackBerry OS, and Ubuntu Touch all have the potential to be a great Android-iOS duopoly alternative. It's a real shame that lack of interest from app developers and corporate blunders killed them. That said, we do have Sailfish OS, which used to be Nokia's GNU Linux-based MeeGo.

You people have been saying things like that since Galaxy S launched (Apple killer!) then followed by Windows Phone (now it's no longer a two horse race!) and now people saying what's the point of buying android now that the features unique to them is gone.
You're free to go back to your trusty Nokia candybars then. If anything, millions of phones are sold every year, and most won't even be bothered by this news.
Me? Before accusing me of an Apple fanboy, I used both systems, and I use them for something a normie would do : making calls and sending Whatsapp messages. I don't need sideloading apps, I have used both Apple and Android since iPhone 4s and Android Gingerbread.

Target Version and Minimum Version are two different things. Minimum Versions allow the app to still be installed in the version that is specified. Developers nowadays have Android 5 and up as minimum versions. Target Version is different as it specifies what version the app is made for.
For example:
A Clock App
Target Version: Android 13 (SDK 33)
Minimum Version: Android 6 (SDK 23)
The Clock app above is made for Android 13 but it can be installed on older versions until Android 6. Android 6 users may have less features than Android 13 users like Material You but it will work on Android 6 as intended.
Google only plans to block old apps that TARGET older versions like Android 2,3,4. It's time to move on, most of those app probably wouldn't work as intended anyway. If you have a good app that targets those versions, you can still sideload them using ADB. Older Versions of apps won't be affected unless they target the oldest versions of Android.
