Rodolf, 31 Jan 2023This will result in 2 things: - Hurting us consumers in ... moreCannot. it will hurt US and make Huawei stronger

This will result in 2 things:

    - Hurting us consumers in the short term, because less competition = higher prices, which also means less inventions in smartphone industry.

    - Huawei will make their own technologies eventually which will be bad for U.S. economy itself because by then they don't have to buy anything from western companies, and the rest of Chinese companies will follow same path in fear of facing same issues (that's a huge chunk of smartphone industry!).

Huawei can't be simply killed as long as they're succeeding in other fields and getting support from the Chinese gov.

But on the brighter side, smile! This will force the Chinese to re-invent the wheel and make their own technologies that will benefit the whole world in the long run!

ae86, 31 Jan 2023now do it with BBKimagine Xiaomi and Meizu should be next

I wonder, is this because Huawei recently announced they would be soon making their own NON US built/designed chips to circumvent any USA restrictions??
I cant seem to find the article/s, so i'm not sure of the entire content of it but i'm sure it was along those lines

Anders, 31 Jan 2023There's gonna be a lot of confused Leftists. "... moreExcept most 'leftists' or at least sane people that don't use political parties to know what to think like myself, know that it wasn't on Trump that year when Huawei was banned but a collection of agencies that saw Huawei with massive backdoor access with their networking tech.

I knew Biden was not going to change that so long as said collection of agencies haven't changed their tunes.

This is the right decision. China should be banned from getting US technology.

And i agree, this is how China typically responds to this kind of situations.
And that's why this decision is not a challenge for China, but for the US.
                          Difficult...

If you tighten a string too much it will snap. The US has so far failed to stop Huawei and has not provided a shred of evidence to back up its 'national security' claims.

As a result of almost yearly tightening of unilateral, extraterritorial 'sanctions', the US semiconductor industry has taken a battering in lost revenues and lost stock values. The latest impact has been several companies laying off staff.

These rumoured new sanctions will simply drive the knife deeper into the industry. Less revenue for future R&D.

Huawei and China are already on the road to 'de-Amercanising' supply chains and other non-US/China manufacturers are rumoured to be doing the same.

The outlook, long term, from that perspective is not good.

However, now we have the real prospect of China acting on its very own 'anti foreign sanctions' legislation (in place for a few years now but basically unused) as well as taking tit-for-tat actions against US companies (Tim Cook will probably trying to fix a meeting with Biden as I write).

Let's see how they react if the rumor proves true.

A recent piece from SIA stated that if China pooled its current 7nm foundry capacity (something they were not estimated to even have until years from now) it would outstrip Samsung, Intel and TSMC - combined. That, using existing DUV technology and Huawei itself recently applied for an EUV patent and has invested heavily in every step of the chip manufacturing process. My guess is that they are far closer than anyone suspects on silicon based manufacturing and could be well on the way to non-silicon solutions.

Will China allow these alleged proposals to go unchallenged? That is the big question.
