Those kind of thermometers cost around 50 euro, so having one in the phone is a great thing. Of course you won't use it everyday, but it will come in handy when you or someone in your family is feeling sick.
As for how to use it... how about giving your phone to someone else to measure your temperature? Could the writer really not think of that? And even if you have no one around you, just do it a few times until you get it right, it's not like you have only one chance to use it...

Anonymous, 19 May 2023That was good functionality. Same when Samsung came wit... moreIt was a great feature, just not implemented well unfortunately. One day it would work really well, the next day it just wouldn't detect your iris at all. It was a great idea, but I can see why it got dropped

They should've just added 3D ToF LiDAR in the camera pill and used the space occupied by the thermometer sensor for a dual-LED dual-tone flash setup instead.

Anonymous, 19 May 2023Samsung copying 3,2,1 ..... Everything google does is copying from someone else. Even the Android cs functions are copied from all other OEMs or apps. The only original things in their lineup are those who were bought

I can feel the sarcastic sting hard in this one. It's just funny to me when the writers praise Apple for releasing the same thing with only the slightest changes year over year. The infrared thermometer doesn't appear to be the most practical feature in the world, but it would be more useful than some other smartphone features from the past and yes Soli included.

StarfoxHUN, 19 May 2023Remember guys, the 3.5mm got removed because there's n... moreKinda related: Apple removed the simcard tray in US version and replaced it with a literal block of plastic...just because.
Companies only care how the phone look from the outside. If they can design better hardware placements inside the phone, I believe there's room for headphone jack, sdcard slot, IR blaster, notification led, or popup front cam in every phone. They just don't want to do that.

If works well, it can be useful. Imagine, you are on a long road, and you start to feel sick, and you want to check if you have fever or not. So in some sort of scenarios it can be useful, but ONLY if that sensor can be reliable.

Anonymous, 19 May 2023So, instead of using TSMC chip to fix their own temperature... moreI'm usually annoyed by people calling Google's chips Tensynos, but damn are you right with this one. Yesterday my Google Pixel 7 Pro was like 45°C-50°C when on a group call on WhatsApp. This thing overheats at the most random of tasks and times.

Gimmick or not, I applaud that. I hate the oversimplification of phones when manufacturers remove features because "most people won't use them". Don't want to use it? That's fine, nobody forces you, it's there if you will need it one day.
inb4 "this will make the phone a thousand dollar more expensive" the sensor probably costs between 1 and 2 dollars, and I'm speaking generally about auxiliary features like FM radio, infrared port, LED notification lights etc. - it's never a matter of money, these features are often found on low- and midrange phones while they almost don't exist on flagships. It's just dumb.
