Anonymous, 19 May 2023The reviews speak for themselves. 8+ gen 1 phones run for 2... moreI think it is a good plan using the 8g1+ if it keeps the phone under £600 while getting the benefits of battery endurance and performance.

7g2 is definitely not an unclocked 8g1+ though, only thing really similar is the cores used for the cpu, gpu is weaker (adreano 725 vs 730), only runs dual chnnel memory (vs quad channel in the 8 series), i think worse ISP, worse modem too (x62 vs x65). Phones performance isnt just cpu performance but everything else included (dont think nothing use their own custom ISP etc to reduce the actual overall performance between the 2 SoCs).

Anonymous, 19 May 2023I don't see anything using av1. Hevc still used everyw... moreGoogle has been encoding and streaming in AV1 most popular modern videos for quite some time now. At least for a year I guess.

8K videos on YT are *only* in AV1. Granted not that many people are interested in this resolution but if you're buying a new smartphone in 2023, you wanna make your purchase futureproof, don't you?

6nm now 5nm will be mid range Qualcomm SM8550-AC Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (4 nm)

I love how some ppl believe trading 8g2 for 8+g1 would make phone cost $200-250 less, when impact on bill of materials is not even 1/4 of this.

Anonymous, 19 May 2023I don't see anything using av1. Hevc still used everyw... moreThat's probably because you don't have any devices with HW AV1 support. I can tell you that YouTube for one has been making great use of it so far, and Netflix and Twitch are expected to hop on the bandwagon shortly. It's particularly great at improving video quality at lower bitrates.

Also, you show your total ignorance by claiming that everyone is using HEVC, when pretty much no one does because of its high licensing costs. Right now you can use VP9 as long as you promise to never sue Google, or you're stuck with AVC/H264.

Okay I get it, the tech industry moves fast. But that was less than a year ago!

Ottonis, 19 May 2023"Pei also said that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 was chosen... moreSince you know so much, you must also know that 8 gen 2 heats more than 8+ gen 1. Pei chose it as it's reliable and will cost him less.

Anonymous, 19 May 2023How is 8+ gen 1 better than gen 2 in efficiencyIts not, but the fact that its an older chip makes it much cheaper o manufacture.

Just like majority of people don't upgrade to the latest phone every year, why do we need every phone to be with the latest chip?
Nothing Phone is a midrange device, starting at £399 and 1/2 year old processor is more than enough for it, especially when there was nothing wrong with 8+Gen1. It's a logical move.

Only neards care about the year of a thing and not what can do that thing. 8+1 is an extremely powerful chip, much better than 90% of all sold around the globe.
This chip should be kept in production for years and just optimized for a better price, instead of producing new but inferior products on entry and middle products.
