That said, my phone only ever got one update. But perhaps you get what you paid for.

Fools and their money are soon parted. Paying double for a budget phone and hope to make it worthwhile by keep buying parts to make it lasts 8 years.

As Fairphone still need these child labors and miners to have all the material and hardware used in there phones cause they also order there parts trough these companies that use these low paid job people and they dont make the life better for these low paid people anyways. Pay more for the people who work in EU where cost of living is way higher to justify like that is fair for these people who do the hard work is jjust weird.
It's not like the Fairphone have there factory in China and then pay the European wages to them to make this point valid

These same people mostly dont care for the point of 4-5 years of updates anyways. A lot of people dont even update there phones when updates come out.
Never mind that the majority of people dont use more then 5-10% of phones features and the added features with new updates dont mean much to them as they dont know about them and dont care to look up what is new as the patch notes usually dont have much in them after you update the phone
It's only the enthusiasts who care for the updates but then again these people usually dont even have there new phones last for the end of the phone update schedule as they want new features trough hardware with new phones like better cameras and other new things added to the phones.
Also the network you are contracted to have solutions like network security you can pay for to have more security or just get antivirus apps and spyware apps to protect the phone that are also the options to protect your phone when the updates stop.
I lived 3 and half years with my last phone no updates and i didnt miss any of them or had any need. I also dont install custom OS on my phones even tough i have the option for it. I would do it only if some apps that are dare for me stop supporting old android version but even that is usually the case that these apps support still like 10 years these old versions. Like there is still support for android 4 even on some apps even now

But the underpaid labourers in China, the child labourer, the miners who exploit the metals with the pure hands in Kongo, these poor people are all paying the other $350 dollars you don't want to pay. So don't be so ignorant and maybe get some empathy for other people you don't see straight out of your window.
Furthermore, the company is produce much lower numbers of devices, hence their phone will be anyway more expensive than a Xiaomi or Oneplus.
It's not so hard to understand why this phone has an, at the first glimps, very high price point. But if you thing for a second you'll understand why and who is paying towards your $350 phone. And yes, some people are not wealthy enough for a $700 phone. But even in poorer countries there are a lot of people with expensive iPhones or S-Series Samsung's. So what is your priority? Showing off of fair labour and pollution? I guess you yourself want to be paid fairly and not exploited. Or leave in a place that's not full of garbage and so polluted you can't even open the windows.

DarlingYext, 30 Aug 2023Oh please, finally someone other than Samsung commits to mo... moreThere are a large part of the people who comment here who use the Samsung or Apple phones and brag about 4-5 years updates while still change there flagship phones yearly or have the phones for 2 years and rare cases for 3 years and then change so what be the point of more updates when people still change there phones.
Also 10 years in electronics is very long time and people just want new device anyways at around 5 years using it. To have better cameras that have advanced in these 5 years or other technology in them when new accessories come out and dont support the old technology that is in these phones.
Also 5 years in the future you already have 100-200 euro phones that are better in every way shape and form to this fairphone 5 cause it is coming with middle class performance.

For me personally it's different as I can install a custom ROM. Although just having an OS that works out of the box would be more pleasently 😅

Android 14 in early... moreYes, there's a very poor track record for major Android updates, which is disappointing, given how few phones they have to support.
Do they release monthly patches?
Overall, the specs are actually decent. It's very expensive though. We live in a disposable society and most people will purchase a flagship instead, which will perform better and last years anyway,

Do you know how much the people get for wage and what is average wage in China ? You cant look at the fair wage based on the perspective on where you live either in EU or in USA. Also i dont think these people get so fair wage in EU also where all the prices and cost of living is crazy high.
How is it fair for my wallet to pay for them 2 phones prices on there hardware specs they give me ? It's just the software and warranty that cost a lot.
Also Eco is a scam just like the global warming that we need to ditch the power plants that produce co2 and are taxed by the ton of coal and not on the co2 it makes after going trough all types of filter. And then all must go on solar panel and windmill that all are flawed while windmill is a serious pollution to earth cause it's wing last like 10 years and cant be recycled. Also when everything is going electric that means we need to make more and more of the windmills and solar panels to cover the land to meet the needs for rising power consuming.
But they call it eco friendly so it must be good even tough it's way more expensive and on most part will be more wasteful also cause to make new product out of used material also take a lot of energy and is more expensive then the material was at first and also in most cases recycled plastic will be more toxic for our planet but it's eco-friendly like they say

The price we pay now is for the commitment to support this phone in the next 10 years. I doubt Fairphone will last more than 3-4 years from now as a company.

You are exactly the opposite of the customers that Fairphone attracts. That's why you would buy an A52s and other's would buy a Fairphone. Different ideals and that's ok.
