Anonymous, 30 Aug 2023Nope, even better I'll get Poco F5, use for 5 years, t... moreI don't game on my phone and my previous nexus 5 would have been good enough even now if it had security updates. I have a lot of MFA apps on my phone and I really hate transferring them to new device. Current phones are more than good enough for non-gaming use for 10 years. They are not like few first android generations where performance really mattered for everyday tasks. Fairphone also says on their fairphone 5 page that they will have at least 5 android os updates, meaning android 18 should be last one.

I totally understand that some people need more performance out of their phones, but for what I use nexus 5 already had plenty of performance, and for these users I think this is pretty good option. Only issue I see in this phone is no wireless charging. I don't have a car, but for some car owners this might be deal braker, and i also think this was bad decision.

Strange, Swiss media says the official price is 629 Euros. Where do you have your information from? The media outlet also already has a Fairphone 5 already for testing.
The article is in German but yous should all know deepl or google translator xD

Personally I'm a bit unsure if a Poco F5 isn't performing better in five to eight years time and still getting security updates thanks to custom ROMs. And in five years foldables are cheaper and better than today so I might want to change to such a one anyways. But I really appreciate Fairphone trying to improve workers condition and the re-use of already mined metals which is the best way to protect the environment.

Hey, EU, if you're not too busy stuffing your pockets with corporate gifts, can we deal with these greedy trillion dollar corporations pretending iit s hard to update software, when free software can provide lifetime updates?

            Thank you beefy much.

Pangsailousai, 30 Aug 2023I used to be in this camp but then I've only mostly us... moreThe greatest misunderstanding in gsmarena is the assumption that people want headphone jack for better quality. While it's true that according to physical laws, 3.5mm or any wired is better than wireless in quality and latency for given price, the main reason we want it is convenience. It's much more convenient to just plug in headphone and not worry about anything. When you're not moving about, it makes little sense to use wireless. Why worry about charging, pairing etc? Yes, you can use USB C dongle, but then you can't charge meanwhile. And you'll be overusing the USB C port, because now you'll be charging and listening though it, causing more wear and tear, requiring frequent, expensive replacements.

Extra battery capacity will make up for removability. Total spend less than €700, with new android version too. Are you going to use same Android for 10 years on laggy chipset? Remember, 10 year update is "security" update, not feature update. The chipset of Unfairphone is already poor, it can realistically take upto Android 16 at most.
Or maybe spend €100 more and get Xperia 5V in December, is will have both microSD card and headphone jack and better everything.

The rest of the phone are totally tr#ds, you are not missing out on anything really, if you care for the 3.5mm jack you must have certain tastes in sound otherwise any run of the mill type-C earphone will do. I know this from experience, people who just want to hear a lot of bass or any sound will not know the difference so the 3.5mm jack is now really the domain of audiophiles. I am one and I would assume anyone who really cares for the 3.5mm jack isn't crying just so they can hook up those lame samsung supplied "AKG" tuned $3 earphone abominations. In that case this person will really first get themselves a nice HiRes DAC like the iBasso, iFi, Questyle, Shanling, FiiO et cetra.

That was off-topic, coming back to the subject, this is a good step in the right direction, Would have expected a slightly better SoC but this 778G class SoC aint no slouch.

This is one of the rare times where I'm going to complain about the lack of a headphone jack. I just don't see why they'd remove that considering the people this phone is intended for.

You will see all the Chinese haters come out and dog any OPPO, Vivo, or Xiaomi release and complain about lack of software support and when a brand comes out with stellar support...they find other reasons to complain and whine. The 778G is more than enough to handle 10 years of updates. Smartphone SOCs now, even budget and midrange, are way more powerful than the software they run compared to 10 years ago. Nearly every phone was janky running at
