Weekly poll: will you use the Fairphone 5 for the next 8 years?

10 September 2023
The phone will get software support for at least that long, possibly up to 10 years. And it comes with 5 years warranty and the best repairability of any current phone.

Lots of users here who flaunt their beloved company's long term support (Apple and Samsung) almost always buy/change to a new phone a year or two later. Empty words lmao.

Not bad but 120HZ screen is needed.

My current daily driver has sd8g2, takes good photos and videos. Good software support. I can make it last for 8 years if i want to but i wont. May be ill be using this for 2 to 3 years tops. Ill just take really good care of it.
For people to really bite, make your hardware the best of its time at the best possible price. That of course with your promise of 8 years support.

The article is can you use your phone for the next 8 years?
The answer is a qualified yes.

Ever phone manufacturer pays Google for each OS release and each security patch it promises and then delivers.

Apple is different as it delivers these now shortened to 5 years, but DOES NOT have to pay itself (unless there is internal transfers between departments) for either.

The warranty however long is a selling point, as most warranty claims occur in the early years, warranty is claims for defects in manufacturing, they are "discovered" with phone use, so unlikely to remain unobserved until year 5.

Claims under warranty do not reset the clock, it commenced from day of purchase

If your phone does everything you want it to do, there is little reason to upgrade

The OS upgrades in some cases are minimalistic at best, that is my opinion

iPhone 15 will not have WiFi 7, other phones already have.
6G yes SIX G is slated for 2030 so @ 2030 this phone won't be 6G or have WiFi 7

OS upgrades are more relevant and provide more with each GENERATION upgrade.

The point I hope I am making is the S23 Ultra if that is your phone of choice would need multiple battery replacements to go for 8 years, battery cost, and technician costs.

In April 2023 both my contract phone and 2nd phone, broke down, physical damage so no warranty, 2nd well outside warranty
        Both repairable Yes?

In the end I had to purchase two phones, both non flagship, Flagship or nothing.

Hypothetically I COULDN'T go back to either as both NEW offer more than the respective phones they replaced

There is an almost daily offering of new phones, new new features better specs.

If you don't need to upgrade as your phone does what you needed it to do then yes .

As the contracts I sign up to are 2 years, I usually upgrade every 3 to 4, this cycle was longer due to Covid lock down

If you haven't claimed under warranty during contract, it is unlikely you will. There are some who update yearly, and some go years.

In the UK, networks have announced that they have already closed down 3G, or will do shortly.

I can't recall if I have seen a 3G phone released on this site, 4G launched 2013, 5G launched 2019 (The mod contract replacement was my 1st 5G replacing the broken 4G)

But maybe that's part of the business model, I mean, think about it: maybe their idea to go big, is to sell parts including of course the OLED display?

Either ways, it might help a little to keep black wallpaper, dark theme and so, I do the same on my OLED equipped G8x.

I've answered, "I wish, its not available in my region".

Now for the detailed answer, I want Fairphone to succeed so that mainstream brands can copy and go the same route, I want to give serviceability, long term updates, upgradable parts, etc for the environment as well as user convenience of not changing phones all the time.

I used my Redmi 2 Prime for 7 years before it faded, and then I got LG G8x which again I plan for long term, already done 3 years.

BUT, I do not want a Fairphone yet, its not music focused like LG G8x or Sony flagships, nor does it particularly excel at any one thing. Maybe if they create a music oriented phone, I'd be in.

Well as the technology develops is it not obvious that they should last as long as they can and should have a option to upgrade selective components. Recycling is a scam and its very hard to.

IpsDisplay, 10 Sep 2023People are gonna probably attack me for saying this But ... moreIDK about others experience with OLED but my phones have not shown any issues with it so far. The only exception was a moto phone that developed green lines but that was a factory assembly problem rather than with the display itself

With 1 update every second year, and 4 security updates a year? Nah.

Better stick to the brands that are monthly updated.

People are gonna probably attack me for saying this

But I think it's a bad idea that they chose an OLED screen for an 8 year OLD support device

Yes there will be people with no issues from burn in

But am I being unreasonable and illogical to expect that some customers will have bad burn in and have to deal with costly OLED screen replacements over that time period?

Average person in my country keeps their phone between and 3 and a half years. Plus if I really cared about the environment, I would be the phone I want and just keep it until it breaks. Better then a phone you don't want and night be inclined to just replace once you're fed up.

I can use this phone for that long with the only question being whether the performance will still be quick and bugs-free after several years of ownership

Pic, 10 Sep 2023It's not about having to move your pictures to your PC... moreWont it be stressful also that your phone gets slow cause you have the problem of a hoarding everything ? If you fill up your 128GB storage then the phone get slower too. Or worse have it 256/512/1TB

It makes no sense to complain about storage option on a phone that have microSD card so you can have 1TB microSD card in your phone for your hoarding needs.
It's like on this topic i understand it somehow at least when the phone would not have the microSD slot but it has it so why complain about internal storage option for the phone ?
