Weekly poll: will you use the Fairphone 5 for the next 8 years?

10 September 2023
The phone will get software support for at least that long, possibly up to 10 years. And it comes with 5 years warranty and the best repairability of any current phone.

MRSTEK, 10 Sep 2023Just think about using a SD808 or Exynos 5430 in 2023, and ... moreThere are people who still do it though. A friend of mine still keep his Snapdragon Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and now use it for mainly for social media and teleprompter for his YouTube videos.

YUKI93, 10 Sep 2023I still see people using 2016 and 2017 phones to this day, ... moreIf you live in Southeast asia.
Phone repair is piece of cake.
There's a lot of small repair shop can repair old phone with cheap part.
Not a problem for any phone brand.
(Meaning... Fairphone don't have any benefits)

I don't even use flagships for more than two years, so using a crap fairphone for 8 years?! Lol no.

        Certainly *NOT* !!!
I buy new phone every 2-3 years
While I still use my old phone as secondary phone
I don't want to use until 8 or 10 years
        It's way too long.

If they used sd 7gen 2 or sd 8+gen 1 then yes i will use this phone for 6-7 years

I still see people using 2016 and 2017 phones to this day, so I don't see any problem with this Fairphone as well. Also, you can easily get the spare parts from Fairphone's official website and repair it by yourself. I don't see anyone doing the same thing as it.

Just about the only thing that stops me from getting this phone is the shipping. Fairphone aren't selling their product outside EU since they want to maintain their low carbon footprint.

It's almost what I want out of a phone. I support the concept of an easily repairable phone with a long warranty and updates.

However, it's just slightly below what I want out of a phone in terms of performance. I want a good camera, its camera is only average. I want long battery life. I need better water and dust resistance. I don't need a flagship SoC, but its soc is a bit slow and inefficient.

Basically, my current 4-year-old phone matches its specs. I'm looking to upgrade, not sidegrade.

Promises like this does not count for anything unless they’ve got a track record.. And given the relatively weak chipset they’re using, one can only imagine how sluggish the phone might feel only 3-4 years from now. Apple can give six years of updates partly because their iPhones being quite overpowered. And given Apples track record and more than stable economic conditions, it’s not very likely that they are bankrupt six years from today. If the Fairphone doesn’t sell well, they might very well be outcompeted, and bankrupt sooner than later. A promise like this isn’t worth much…

10 years is too long, maybe 5 years is enough, and I also think people will get bored if they use the same cellphone for a long time.

If I should buy this device I will be pleased very much but not for years of support but for the fact that when I wanna switch and use another device- the person who I may sell to may also use it for long .

No as is for me, BUT... Assuming it was a smaller phone, an upper midrange SoC, a good camera, a stock Android experience for a good price; then YES! Why not? The idea is good, but the product doesn't appeal to me.

Just think about using a SD808 or Exynos 5430 in 2023, and you'll get the answer.

if the software performance is Smooth. atleast in par with samsung a Series. i would definitely love to try this phone.

it would last 8 years if it had 512gb storage option.

                                    too big
                                    no audio jack
                                    too expensive
don't give a crap about being green and environment friendly, just want phone can be repaired cheaply.

Im not interested in a mid-range phone with pretty bad camera, screen, sound, specs... Only good thing going for it is how modular it is.
