Ah yes each Ultra phone since S23 has been a downgrade... S22 Ultra is literally better by many ways compared to S23 Ultra.

Anonymous, 20 Sep 202350MP at 5x zoom. I actually don't see that as a proble... moreNot really as the sensor isn't 4Times larger to make up for it.
an 1/5.04 Sensor crop at 10 times is about the same size as those
2MP macro sensors.
having 12.5MP or 5MP there wouldn't really make a difference because of its sensor size.
Just like the main cam may only get a slight advantage in 200MP mode over 50MP mode, but not neary 4Times the detail.

As always, it seems desperate by iPhone 15 PM, Samsung is ditching own unique features!
But it is shame how Samsung will react if next year iPhone comes with 10x.
Same like they ditched VR, but now Apple is bringing it back.
Samsung you are lost copying and blindly following Apple footsteps. If above news is true I will say goodbye to Samsung for good....!
I was about to upgrade my Note20U to S23U but Samsung's such decisions making me switch to iPhone15PM.

50MP at 5x zoom. I actually don't see that as a problem. I can bet it'll make better digital zoom photo than the current S23 Ultra.

Firstly S23 Ultra doesn't have 10× zoom. It has 9.583× zoom. Have a good day.

Samsung advertises these 200mp so much, can't it deliver about 3x zoom with little loss in quality, use a 4x or 5x telephoto with 50mp and leave the 10x alone or increase it to 50mp too, seriously you have to take it out, put in 5x, bet on hybrid zoom and leave that 3x sensor stagnant for another year? Look at the Xiaomi 13 Ultra for example, if Xiaomi were as careful with the software as Samsung, it could be much better, anyway... It doesn't matter, I'll wait for it to be launched and see the tests, but maybe it's time to go to another brand .

Here's a list with the relative number of pixels per angle you can get with certain smartphone cameras. The higher the number, the more details you should usually get from distant objects and the more you can theoretically zoom (if diffraction isn't an issue). Effective lens diameter, different color filter arrays and image processing influence the results, but the relative number of pixels per angle is the most important specification here. QB stands for Quad Bayer array, B for Bayer array, QBY for Quad Bayer with yellow pixels. Dual pixels have been counted as one pixel.
100% Xiaomi 13 Ultra QB
98% Google Pixel 7 Pro QB
91% Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra B
88% Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra B
75% Huawei P60 Pro QBY
50% Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max B
43% Google Pixel 6 Pro B
32% Apple iPhone 15 Pro B
22% Apple iPhone 15 QB
11% Apple iPhone 14 B
(Note that the Pixel 6 Pro actually has a Quad Bayer sensor, but it used crops from the 12 megapixel low resolution mode (which has a Bayer array) for its zoom, this changed with the 7 Pro)
(Also note that the Google Pixel 7 Pro is indeed slightly superior in comparison with the S23 Ultra, when it is used at 15x and with its short Night Sight mode, see my previous posts, though the periscope image quality of Pixel 7 Pro units varies)

ecrg, 20 Sep 2023Bad decision from Samsung. S23 Ultra has sharp, usable phot... moreI compared my Pixel 7 Pro in a store with the S23 Ultra and its definitely a tiny bit superior at 360mm (that's approximately 15x) regarding distant non-moving objects when Google's short Night Sight mode is used. This actually makes sense because the Pixel 7 Pro gives you 11.4 megapixels at 240mm whereas the 230mm camera of the S23 Ultra only has approximately 9.2 megapixels at 240mm. See my previous comments.
Google's short Night Sight mode delivers more detail than the default mode because the sensor area of the 7 Pro is only approximately 5.6mm² at 240mm! (slightly smaller than 1/5" type) This means that the base Iso image quality benefits a lot from combining more frames.
No reviewer tests the daylight 15x image quality with Night Sight turned on and Google's periscope camera is often compared at 10x or 30x, but 30x will nearly always give you a worse result than a 2x crop from a 15x photo: I have tested it many times, Google's image processing is very bad at 30x.
